About this file

This document is a technical specification for cryogenic control valves for the Proton Improvement Plan II (PIP-II) Cryogenic Distribution System at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The specification covers 46 control valves for the Tunnel Transfer Line (TTL), including 25 valves for Bayonet Cans and 6 valves for a Turnaround Can, to be used in helium service across various temperature ranges from 2K to 80K. Key technical requirements include top-load angle body valves with bellows spindle seals, pneumatic diaphragm actuators, specific heat leak and leak tightness performance standards, and compatibility with high radiation environments.

The procurement process requires vendors to submit detailed technical and business proposals by May 19, 2025, with evaluation criteria focusing on technical merit, quality assurance, delivery capabilities, management control, and past experience. The valves will be delivered in four lots within 40 weeks after purchase order, with specific requirements for manufacturing, testing, documentation, and quality control. Vendors must have at least 15 years of experience with 2K helium service valves and demonstrate successful delivery of similar valves for particle accelerator projects. The contract will be awarded on a best-value trade-off basis, with technical factors significantly more important than price.

1. Introduction and Scope

1.1. PIP II Cryogenic Distribution System (CDS)

1.1.1. Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FERMILAB) located in Batavia, IL is building a next generation proton accelerator called the Proton Improvement Plan II (PIP-II). The PIP-II accelerator (Linac) design is based on superconducting radio frequency (SRF) technology employed in twenty-three SRF cryomodules. The linac requires cryogenic helium for operation, which is provided by the Cryogenic Distribution System (CDS).

The CDS comprises the equipment needed to feed and return cryogenic helium from a cryogenic plant to the SRF cryomodules. The CDS includes Distribution Valve Box (DVB), Intermediate Transfer Line (ITL), and Tunnel Transfer Line (TTL). Figure 1.1 presents a schematic overview of the PIP-II CDS. The PIP-II CDS feeds individual cryomodules (CM) in the Linac string with the source of the proton beam emanating upstream.

Figure 1.1 Schematic of PIP-II Cryogenic Distribution System

1.2. Cryogenic control valves in the CDS

1.2.1. The following CDS components use cryogenic valves: The Distribution Valve Box (DVB) in the Cryoplant Building, each CDS Bayonet can, 25 total in the accelerator tunnel, and

1 Turn Around Can in the accelerator tunnel.

Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory 5

2. Scope

2.1.1. This specification is for cryogenic control valves on the Tunnel Transfer Line (TTL).

2.1.2. The control valves on the Distribution Valve Box (DVB) are not in the scope of this specification.
