About this file

The document is a comprehensive sign and building guidelines manual created by the City of Orlando to maintain brand consistency for internal and external facility identification, wayfinding, and informational signage. The manual provides detailed specifications for various types of signs, including park ID signs, rule signs, transportation signage, community garden signs, city building signs, dedication plaques, and public art installation plaques. The guidelines cover typography, color schemes, logo usage, layout principles, and specific design requirements for different sign types across city facilities, with a mandate that all signs created after May 1, 2017, must reflect the new brand standards.

The manual emphasizes a consistent visual identity using specific color palettes (such as Pantone 349 for informational signs and Pantone 294 for rule signs), prescribed typography (primarily Texta font family), and standardized logo placement. Different sign types have unique design requirements, such as park ID signs using Lambeau Green, transportation signs using Pantone 7727C, and dedication plaques using Palatino fonts. The document also provides guidance on special cases like multiple-use buildings, police and fire facility signage, and public art installation plaques, with an emphasis on obtaining approvals from the Communications and Neighborhood Relations department for most permanent signage. The comprehensive nature of the manual suggests a strategic approach to municipal branding and visual communication.

TRANSPORTATION

TRANSPORTATION - PARKING IDENTITY

Garages: This standard will be utilized to identify city-owned parking garages.

P PThe standard, universal P in blue is always preferred.

Used to identify parking when space is limited.

Use P in reverse when necessary.

(see example A)

The city emblem should be added to a parking facility when parking signage exists and has not been updated with the new brand in order to identify city-owned garages.

If space exists, utilize this option in order to identify city-owned parking.

Utilize this logo where necessary on informational signage footers unless the emblem is already part of the design.

On parking lot identification signs, the emblem should be placed at the top above name of the lot.

This example has an emblem at the top, therefore does not need a city parking logo.

For payment/rate signs, the entire City of Orlando Parking logo should be present.

Either the emblem or City of Orlando Parking logo should be used on informational parking signage. Always add a customer service or contact phone number.

CITY BUILDINGS

CITY FACILITY SIGNAGE

All city buildings should be marked and identified with brand approved, appropriate signage. It’s mandatory that staff replace signs if they are faded, broken, or have improper branding.

Any signage that is permanently attached to a city facility or permanent free-standing signage identifying the building, or space within the building must be approved by Communications and Neighborhood Relations.

This includes:

• building identification installed on the outside of the facility

• building identification signs installed in the ground on the property

• welcome signs, hours of operation, etc. that may be affixed to the doors

• wayfinding signage

• internal floor, room, space identification

*OPD and OFD facilities are an exception. Those standards are continued on the following pages.

Signage that are universally standard or required by law do not need approval by Communications and Neighborhood Relations. Examples include:

• exit signs

• smoking prohibited

• room capacity

MULTIPLE USE BUILDINGS

Buildings that are used by more than one department must use the primary City of Orlando logo. (see photo A)

If departments or offices occupy one designated section of the building, including the entrance, identification for that office or department may be affixed with signage upon approval by Communications and Neighborhood Relations. (see photo B)

Green is reserved for Families, Parks and Recreation buildings, park ID and informational signs. Blue will be used for all other departments with the exception of Police and Fire.

(see photo C)

PHOTO A PHOTO B

PHOTO C

OFD FACILITY SIGNAGE

OFD facility signage is essential for residents to identify city services in their area. Full OFD branding (OFD authority emblem and City of Orlando wordmark) must be used. Visibility and other site conditions should be considered for proper placement and construction of all signage. If the facility does not allow for proper size or placement, a facade must be constructed near the station driveway.

All facility branding must be approved by Communications and Neighborhood Relations to ensure the city brand is used correctly. To increase legibility, the logo may be slightly adjusted. This will be on a case-by-case basis.

The fire station number must be large enough to read from the street and displayed in all caps. “FIRE STATION 9” is an example of the correct format.

Examples:

• location marking signs, including signage for free-standing administrative buildings

• building identification

• office identification

• banners

The OFD branding pictured above is 168” wide by 40” tall.

• Sign materials may vary.

• 3/8” aluminum with a depth of 1” is preferred.

• Matte finishing options, painted white, black, city blue (PMS

#287) or non-painted brushed aluminum finishes are acceptable, depending on building paint color.

Communications and Neighborhood Relations will work with the department or their contracted vendors to determine appropriate location placement on building, as well as other potential branding decisions.

OPD FACILITY SIGNAGE

OPD facility signage is essential for residents to identify city services in their area. Full OPD branding (OPD authority emblem and City of Orlando wordmark) must be used.

Substation name or number must be large enough to read from the street and displayed in all caps. “LAKE NONA POLICE OFFICE” is an example of the correct format.

Examples:

• location marking signs, including signage for free standing administrative buildings

• building identification

• office identification

• banners

LAKE NONA POLICE OFFICE

ENTRANCE DOOR VINYLS

Facilities requiring entrance door vinyls should contain the appropriate city branding.

If there is an “automatic door sticker” on one door, the center’s information goes on the other door.

Typography and Format:

• 20” wide x 28” tall (height depends on the amount of information)

• top - emblem with the neighborhood center name

• hours below center name

• all centered

• all caps

• hours to be shown in accordance to brand guidelines

See below for a sample of updated art, sizing and layout for neighborhood center doors.
