About this file
The document is a 2024 Curbside Recycling & Refuse Newsletter and Calendar issued by the City of Pittsburgh's Department of Public Works, Bureau of Environmental Services. The newsletter provides comprehensive guidance for residents on recycling and waste disposal, including collection schedules, accepted materials for recycling and yard debris, drop-off locations, and holiday collection dates. The city has implemented a plastic bag ban and provides detailed instructions on proper recycling practices, such as placing recyclables loosely in bins without plastic bags, bundling cardboard, and separating trash and recyclables.
The document outlines specific regulations for curbside collection, including setting out items no earlier than 6:00 p.m. the night before collection, using containers no larger than 35 gallons, and limiting bulk items to two per week. The city offers multiple drop-off locations for recyclables, yard waste, and scrap metal, with varying hours of operation. Scheduled Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) drop-offs are available on select dates in March, May, July, September, and November, requiring advanced registration. The calendar also highlights environmental service holidays when no pickup will occur and provides guidance on worker safety and how to report missed collections.

Recyclables in City issued or other appropriate can
Recycling is collected every other week. Cardboard and other recyclable materials will only be accepted on recycling week.
Pittsburgh Goes Plastic Bag Free!
We’d like to remind you that Pittsburgh has banned plastic bags and they will become increasingly scarce in our community.
When recycling, please place recyclables loosely in the recycling bin at the curb, without bagging them in plastic grocery bags. Overflow recyclables should be placed loosely in another bin clearly marked for recycling.
Thanks for supporting the city’s efforts to go plastic free in stores and at the curb!
