About this file

The document is a 2024 Curbside Recycling & Refuse Newsletter and Calendar produced by the City of Pittsburgh's Department of Public Works, Bureau of Environmental Services. The newsletter provides comprehensive guidelines for residential recycling and waste disposal, including collection schedules, acceptable materials for recycling and yard debris, drop-off locations, and holiday schedules. Key details include recycling collection occurring every other week, a city-wide ban on plastic bags, specific instructions for preparing recyclables and yard waste, and multiple drop-off locations for recyclable materials across different city neighborhoods.

The document outlines specific regulations for curbside pickup, such as setting out items no earlier than 6:00 p.m. the night before collection, using containers no larger than 35 gallons, and limiting bulk items to two per week. The city offers multiple ways to access collection information, including the 311 non-emergency line, MyBurgh app, and online webform. Scheduled household hazardous waste drop-off dates are provided for March 9, May 11, July 12, September 14, and November 9, with advanced registration required. The calendar also highlights environmental service holidays and provides guidance on maintaining safe conditions for waste collection workers.

Recyclables in City issued or other appropriate can

Recycling is collected every other week. Cardboard and other recyclable materials will only be accepted on recycling week.

Pittsburgh Goes Plastic Bag Free!

We’d like to remind you that Pittsburgh has banned plastic bags and they will become increasingly scarce in our community.

When recycling, please place recyclables loosely in the recycling bin at the curb, without bagging them in plastic grocery bags. Overflow recyclables should be placed loosely in another bin clearly marked for recycling.

Thanks for supporting the city’s efforts to go plastic free in stores and at the curb!
