B. Coating systems shall be tested for adhesion per coating manufacturer’s recommended procedures and per ASTM D4541. Failure of the adhesion test below 1,500 psi is considered grounds for rejection of the pipe.
C. Tape coating system shall be tested with a pulse holiday detector prior to shipment.
40 05 24 - 9
STEEL PIPE - WATERMAIN
1. Holidays and tears are grounds for repair per the tape manufacturer’s recommendations.
Wrinkles with no tears or holidays do not require repair.
D. Repairs:
1. In the event of torn tape coating with no holidays:
a. Cut the torn tape with a sharp utility knife and remove.
b. Wash and prepare the surface to be coated per the tape manufacturer’s instructions.
c. Apply approved tape coating meeting the standards set forth in AWWA C209. Repair tape shall be compatible with the tape system that is being repaired.
E. Complete steel pipe and fittings lot shall be made available for inspection by the City at the manufacturer’s facility prior to shipment, with at least 1-week’s advanced notice before inspection is allowed.
F. City shall be allowed to witness any and all factory tests at the manufacturer’s facility.
G. Certificate of Compliance: Manufacturer shall submit a Certificate of Compliance after all pipe and fittings are complete and ready for shipment. Certificate will guarantee that all materials provided under this Specification conform in full to the Contract Documents.
2.10 ROUNDNESS
A. The out-of-roundness of pipe ends shall be consistent with the diameter and wall thickness of the pipe supplied and the type of joint. Any out-of-roundness shall be limited to a smooth oval that may be jacked back into a circular shape.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.01 GENERAL
A. Verify dimensions prior to installation.
B. Field locate adjacent utilities prior to installation with pothole verification.
C. Protect adjacent utilities.
3.02 INSTALLATION
A. Install piping and fittings per referenced AWWA standards.
B. Strutting will be installed by manufacturer and shall remain in place until pipe is set in place. Pipe trades welders shall remove strutting.
C. Align pipe in trench to avoid possibility of contact with the side of the trench and fouling prior to welding.
D. Do not install pipe on a frost-penetrated trench floor. Do not lay pipe unless backfilling will occur prior to frost formation.
E. Repair damage to pipe or protective coating caused during installation. Repairs shall be performed per the coating manufacturer’s instructions.
F. Pipe ends must not remain open for periods longer than 2 hours when not being handled. Cover openings with waterproof plastic sheeting to prevent intrusion of water or debris.
G. Deflections at joints shall not exceed manufacturer’s recommendation.
40 05 24 - 10
STEEL PIPE - WATERMAIN
3.03 PIPE JOINTS
A. Wrap welded joints with 80 mil C209-19 cold-applied tape system prior to burying. Perform holiday tests when directed by the project Engineer.
B. Prior to application of exterior lining, prepare surface according to manufacturer’s instructions.
Remove all foreign material, including damaged lining or coating materials. Clean surface with wire brushing.
C. Cement mortar liner shall be applied from the inside with mesh wire reinforcement.
D. Linings must be continuous across all joints, interior and exterior.
3.04 WELDED JOINTS
A. All welds shall be performed by AWWA C206 certified welders.
B. Welds shall be per AWWA C206
1. Full-fillet, full circumference, double lap.
2. Sound and free from embedded scale or slag
3. Watertight
4. Achieve full yield strength of the pipe
5. Tensile strength across the weld not less than that of the thinner of the connected sections
C. Welded Lap Joints
1. Minimum lap requirements: Greater of 1.5-inches or four times the thinner of the wall thicknesses being joined.
2. Weld interior and exterior prior to backfilling.
3.05 BEDDING
A. 12-inches of compacted MnDOT 3149.2G.1 aggregate on sides and above pipe
B. 2 to 6-inches of compacted MnDOT 3149.2G.1 aggregate below pipe. Aggregate shall be placed on undisturbed trench bottom.
C. Blocking under the pipe is not permitted.
3.06 INSTALLATION – SPECIFICS
A. Install according to Drawings, manufacturer’s shop drawings and installation instructions, and the applicable AWWA standards.
B. When placing pipe, handle using one or more padded slings to prevent damage to exterior coating. Any damage to exterior coating must be repaired per the coating manufacturer’s instructions.
C. Support pipe while being fitted and joined to the adjacent pipe section.
D. Pipe exceeding slopes of 10% shall be laid uphill.
3.07 SMALL BRANCH CONNECTIONS
A. Branch connections 4 inches and smaller shall be made with welded fittings with threaded outlets.
B. Steel pipe nipples and welded fittings shall be welded to the pipe and reinforced as required to meet design and test requirements.
40 05 24 - 11
STEEL PIPE - WATERMAIN
C. Small branch connections shall be located so as not to interfere with joints, supports, or other details.
3.08 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
A. Hydrostatic pressure and leakage test shall be per AWWA C600
B. Hydrostatic test pressure shall be between 1.25 and 1.5 times the working pressure of the pipe.
Maintain pressure for 2-hours.
1. Acceptable leakage rate for welded joint pipe is 0.
