About this file
This document establishes minimum hardware and software requirements for Android Tactical Assault Kit (ATAK) End-User Devices (EUDs) procured for tactical operations.
For EUD phones, the requirements specify a modern multi-core processor (Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 series or equivalent), 8 GB or greater system RAM, 256 GB or greater internal storage, a minimum 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display (2340 x 1080 FHD+, 425ppi, 1,750nits outdoor peak, 48-120Hz adaptive), a minimum 3,900 mAh battery, Android 13 or newer operating system, and additional features including Night Vision Mode, Stealth Mode, and carrier unlocking. For EUD tablets, requirements include a minimum Samsung Exynos 1380 5nm octa-core processor or better, 6 GB RAM or greater, 128 GB or better internal storage, a minimum 8.0-inch WUXGA TFT display (16:10 aspect ratio, up to 120Hz, enhanced glove touch sensitivity), a minimum removable 5,050 mAh Li-Po battery, Android 14 or newer operating system, and the same additional features (Night Vision Mode, Stealth Mode, and carrier unlocking). Each requirement includes detailed justifications explaining why the specifications are necessary for ATAK functionality, including performance demands for multi-threaded operations, map rendering, video streaming, outdoor visibility, extended operational battery life, security updates, and tactical network flexibility across diverse global infrastructure.

Subject: Minimum Hardware and Software Requirements for Android Tactical Assault Kit (ATAK) End-User Device (EUD) Procurement
MINIMUM TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS: Any device procured for this purpose must meet or exceed all the following characteristics.
a. Minimum Hardware Requirements EUD Phone:
Characteristic Minimum Requirement Justification (Why this is required for ATAK) Processor Modern, multi-core processor (e.g., Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 series or equivalent)
ATAK is a multi-threaded application that is CPU-intensive. An underpowered processor will cause application lag, slow map rendering, and system crashes, making it unsuitable for real-time operations.
System RAM 8 Gb or greater ATAK is memory-intensive, especially when rendering high-resolution maps, multiple video feeds, and running plugins simultaneously. Devices with less than 6GB of RAM experience system instability and application crashes during mission-critical operations.
Internal Storage 256GB or greater Mission data packages, including high-resolution satellite imagery and map files, can exceed 50GB per mission. Slower storage (e.g., eMMC) causes significant delays in data loading and map rendering.
Display Minimum 6.1" Dynamic AMOLED 2X 2340 x 1080 (FHD+), 425ppi, 1,750nits (Outdoor Peak), Flat Screen, 48~120Hz Adaptive
The display must be readable in direct sunlight.
Battery Minimum 3,900 mAh capacity or better
For standard operational duty cycles, devices equipped with less than 3,900 mAh fail to reliably support multi-hour operations without supplemental power packs. Specifying ≥ 3,900 mAh ensures operational reliability, sustains continuous data links to external C2 nodes, and reduces the operator's physical and logistical load.
Operating System Android 13 or newer Required for compatibility with the latest version of ATAK and to receive ongoing security updates from the OS vendor.
Additional Features Night Vision Mode, Stealth Mode and Carrier Unlocked
Night Vision Mode mitigates the visual detection vector; Stealth Mode eliminates the RF electronic signature, and Carrier unlocking ensures the EUD is network-agnostic and fully functional across any tactical cellular infrastructure worldwide
a. Minimum Hardware Requirements EUD Tablet:
Characteristic Minimum Requirement Justification (Why this is required for ATAK)
Processor Minimum Samsung Exynos 1380, 5nm Octa-core or better
Processors below the Exynos 1380 / 5nm Octa-core performance threshold risk critical latency, stuttering during concurrent map panning and FMV streaming, and excessive thermal degradation under continuous tactical loads.
Establishing this baseline guarantees the tablet will reliably sustain ATAK and concurrent tactical communications plugins.
System RAM 6 GB RAM or better Devices configured with 4GB or less experience frequent background service kills, slow map tiling, and fatal Out-Of- Memory exceptions when running tactical plugins alongside ATAK. Mandating 6GB RAM or greater ensures seamless multi-tasking, continuous background telemetry, and zero-latency situational awareness under heavy operational loads.
Internal Storage 128 GB or better Tablets with less than 128 GB configurations quickly hit critical storage limits once the operating system and a single regional map package are loaded. Mandating 128 GB or greater internal storage guarantees room for multi-region offline data, tactical video logging, and high write speeds during long-duration field deployments.
Display Minimum 8.o”, 16:10, WUXGA, TFT, up to 120Hz, Touch Sensitivity or better
Specifying an 8.0" WUXGA 120Hz display with enhanced glove touch sensitivity ensures the tablet remains combat-effective across mounted and dismounted operations.
Battery Minimum Li-Po, 5,050 mAh, removable or better
Non-removable or sub-5,050 mAh tablet batteries force operators to carry external power bricks and tethered cables, introducing snag hazards and device downtime Mandating a removable 5,050 mAh or better battery guarantees uninterrupted C2 continuity, enables continuous vehicle-mounted operations without thermal cell damage, and optimizes field logistics.
Operating System Android 14 or newer Required for compatibility with the latest version of ATAK and to receive ongoing security updates from the OS vendor.
Additional Features Night Vision Mode, Stealth Mode and Carrier Unlocked
Night Vision Mode mitigates the visual detection vector; Stealth Mode eliminates the RF electronic signature, and Carrier unlocking ensures the EUD is network-agnostic and fully functional across any tactical cellular infrastructure worldwide
