About this file

This is a search assistance guide document provided by the State of Texas to help vendors, particularly those registered with the Veteran Heroes United in Business (VetHUB) program, identify and classify their products and services for state procurement opportunities. The document explains the NIGP (National Institute of Governmental Purchasing) Commodity/Services Code system used by Texas to categorize procurements and match vendors with state purchasing needs. The NIGP coding system organizes procurement classifications into two main categories: Class Codes 001 to 899 for commodities and products, and Class Codes 900 to 999 for services. The Statewide Procurement Division (SPD) and Texas Department of Information Resources utilize this coding structure to facilitate vendor searches through statewide contracts and to help purchasing entities identify qualified suppliers.

The document provides guidance to respondents on how to properly code their products or services using the classitem numbering and descriptions found in the official NIGP commodity book, with instructions to access the searchable database at the CPA website. Bidders are encouraged to become familiar with the NIGP format and contents as they apply to the Centralized Master Bidders List (CMBL) search, which is the master database used by Texas purchasing entities to develop mailing lists and identify vendors capable of providing specific commodities and services to the state. The document serves as a resource to help vendors understand procurement classification requirements and locate relevant bid opportunities aligned with their business capabilities.
