About this file
This appendix document provides guidance from the State of Texas regarding vendor classification and registration systems for procurement opportunities. The document explains that the National Institute of Governmental Purchasing (NIGP) Commodity/Services Code system is used by Texas to classify procurements and match potential vendors with state needs. The Statewide Procurement Division (SPD) and Texas Department of Information Resources utilize NIGP codes to help purchasers source commodities and services through statewide contracts. The NIGP classification system organizes codes with classes 001 to 899 representing commodities and products, while classes 900 to 999 represent services, with specific examples provided such as compressor codes and microcomputer codes for commodities, and business consulting and right-of-way services codes for services.
Respondents and bidders are directed to use the Centralized Master Bidders List (CMBL) search functionality and the NIGP commodity code book to properly classify their products or services. The document encourages bidders to become familiar with the NIGP code format and contents as they apply to vendor registration and bid distribution processes. Vendors can access the NIGP commodity code book and CMBL search database through the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts website to ensure proper registration and receipt of relevant procurement opportunities from Texas purchasing entities.
