About this file

This is a specification document issued by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) for the procurement of one Superpave Gyratory Compactor (SGC). The equipment must be delivered to TxDOT's Materials and Tests Division in Austin, Texas. The SGC is an electromechanical device designed to produce cylindrical asphalt specimens through vertical consolidation pressure and gyratory compaction methods. The unit must be the latest model in current production, new (not used or remanufactured), and capable of meeting or exceeding all federal and state safety, health, lighting, and noise regulations. The equipment must comply with Tex-241-F, AASHTO T 312-22, and ASTM D6925-23 standards. Key operational specifications include a minimum weight of 880 pounds, a gyration speed of 30 ± 0.5 gyrations per minute with 1-999 programmable gyrations, and the ability to produce 150mm diameter specimens with adjustable heights from 62 ± 1mm to 115 ± 5mm. The compactor must include specimen height measurement and recording with 0.1mm accuracy, data storage for at least 20 specimens, and connectivity via one RJ45 Ethernet port and two USB ports. Maximum dimensions are 875mm width, 900mm depth, and 1375mm height.

The specification requires vendors to furnish all necessary components for complete operational readiness, including three 150mm mold assemblies, calibration tools (including a certified 5,000-pound load ring and height calibration block), a specimen extruder, and accessories such as paper disks, a mold funnel, specimen lift handle, and manufacturer-recommended lubricant. Installation and calibration must be performed by a factory-trained technician at the designated TxDOT site, with the vendor providing all cables, hoses, brackets, and accessories necessary for safe installation. The vendor must provide at least 10 days' notice prior to installation. All installation, calibration, and freight charges must be included in the unit price bid. The warranty must cover all parts and labor against material defects and defects in workmanship for a minimum of 12 months commencing upon TxDOT's acceptance of the equipment. Example reference models include Pine Model AFG2A and Gilson Model HM-685. Vendor performance will be monitored regularly, with unsatisfactory performance potentially resulting in negative performance reports, contract cancellation, or liquidated damages.
