About this file
This specifications document outlines requirements for air quality calibration equipment for a Texas state contract (Solicitation Number 582-26-15508). The procurement seeks two primary instruments: a Dynamic Dilution Calibrator and a 20 Standard Liters Per Minute Self-Contained Clean Air Supply System. The Dynamic Dilution Calibrator is a microprocessor-controlled bench-top unit designed to accurately dilute concentrated source gases with diluent gases at flow rates between 2 and 20 liters per minute. The system must support four operating modes (Blend, Blend with GPT, Manual, and Set-timer mode), include a built-in ozone generator with UV optical feedback control, and provide gas phase titration capabilities for nitrogen oxide generation. The calibrator requires multiple input ports for source gases, built-in reference photometer for ozone verification, battery-backed electronic clock, RS-232 serial data port, and remote access software (Numaview) for integration with existing data acquisition systems. The unit must operate between 10 and 50 degrees Celsius on 90-115 VAC, 60 Hz power and include comprehensive operational and service manuals with a two-year warranty covering parts and labor.
The Zero Air Supply System must maintain continuous output flow up to 30 standard liters per minute at 30 psig using an oil-free, diaphragm-free pump with maximum delivery pressure of at least 35 psig. The system includes a regenerative, heatless dryer with expected lifetime exceeding five years, dual-cylinder internal oil-free piston pump with automatic demand-based control, and a dewpoint sensor ensuring output air dew point below negative 40 degrees Celsius. High-performance CO and hydrocarbon scrubbers are required to maintain specified purity levels for sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide content in the output air. Both instruments must be constructed of non-reactive materials including Teflon, stainless steel, and glass equivalents, with precision mass flow controllers calibrated to nitrogen or air at 25 degrees Celsius. The specifications emphasize integration compatibility with existing calibration systems already in place at the facility.

Specifications for Dynamic Dilution Calibrator
Description: Dynamic dilution calibrator; microprocessor controlled for accurately diluting concentrated source gases with diluent gases. Source and diluent flows controlled and measured by separate microprocessor-controlled mass flow controllers.
Minimum General Specifications.
1. Shall dynamically mix a component gas with a balance gas (zero air) at total flow rates from two (2) to twenty (20) liters per minute (LPM) using automatic computation of component and balance gas flow rates.
2. The system shall have a minimum of four (4) operating modes as described hereafter.
a. Blend: By controlling the system from the front panel the user shall be able to specify the port at the rear of the chassis for cylinder gas (input gas port), the cylinder gas concentration, the required dilution and the concentration of the output gas. The system will automatically open the correct solenoid and allow cylinder gas to flow at the correct rate to mix with the correctly controlled dilution gas and provide the desired blend at the rear output at the desired concentration.
b. Blend with GPT. As in 2.A with appropriately mixed ozone to produce the desired level of nitrogen dioxide.
c. Manual. As in 2.A and 2.B with manual selection of all parameters.
d. Set-timer mode: As in 2.A and 2.B except by presetting levels and sequences of levels. Shall provide up to 20 sequences of up to 99 levels that may be set up on a repeating schedule. This permits the calibrator to run automatic, periodic calibrations of up to 6 different gases (including ozone and GPT produced nitrogen dioxide) of various blends. Calibrator should also provide I/O outputs for controlling external valves for routing of gas. These valves draw about 1.0 amps at 12 volts direct current (DC).
3. Shall have built-in stable ozone generator to provide precise and accurately known ozone concentrations (0-1 parts per million [ppm]) using an ultraviolet lamp for ozone generation. The system shall incorporate an internal ultraviolet (UV) optical sensor in a feedback circuit to control the generation of ozone to produce a constant, stable and repeatable ozone concentration at the specified flow rate.
4. Shall have gas phase titration of nitric oxide and ozone for the generation of nitrogen dioxide at precise levels.
5. Shall have a feature that simulates a gas phase titration mixing operation that uses the calibrator’s photometer to adjust the ozone generator drive voltage to match as closely as possible to the target concentration requested in any subsequent real GPT operation.
6. Shall be a freestanding bench top single cabinet model.
7. Shall have front panel alphanumeric display and keypad for manual data input.
8. Gas and air flows shall be controlled by microprocessor supported precision mass flow controllers (MFC) (gas flows 0-100 standard cubic centimeters per minute [SCCM], gas flows 0-20 SCCM, and air flow 0-20 standard liters per minute [SLPM]). Each MFC must be calibrated with nitrogen or air at 25 degrees Celsius. Other ranges shall be optional.
9. Total flow and individual source gas and diluent flows flow rates shall be available for monitoring via the display, which shall also provide gas concentrations, diluent and source gas pressures, ozone oven and chassis temperatures, calibration constants and various other operating parameters.
10. The calibrator shall have diluent air, calibration gas, ozone generator, and ozone photometer pressure sensors that can be verified and calibrated.
11. The calibrator shall include a battery backed-up electronic clock that includes 24-hour time, days, months, and years. The clock shall be settable via the keypad (also remotely) and continue to operate during power outages. The clock will be time synched to the system one or more times weekly via RS-232 commands.
12. The calibrator shall restart itself after a power outage and shall not require readjustment or recalibration upon resumption of power.
13. Calibration data for the flow controllers shall be stored internally and be recallable. Mass flow controller (MFC) calibration data shall utilize a corrective algorithm with at least a ten-point comparison of commanded versus actual flow with linear interpolation between points.
14. Calibration data for the ozone generator shall be stored internally. The calibrator’s software shall be able to run an internal automatic ozone generator calibration program that uses the calibrated internal photometer as a reference. When calibrated the calibrator shall be able to produce ozone at any total flow between one (1) and five (5) SLPM at a concentration of 0.003 to 1 ppm with an accuracy of plus or minus 5%.
15. The system shall have both a reaction chamber for combining ozone and nitrogen oxide gas and a dilution/mixing chamber for mixing and or dilution of gas blends. The ozone generator’s constant flow output goes directly to the reaction chamber. The output of the reaction chamber flows directly to the mixing/dilution chamber and mixes with dilution gas.
16. The calibrator shall have at least one diluent gas input with a single 0-20 LPM MFC and at least four (4) source gas inputs each isolated and controlled by a separate normally closed solenoid valve. The gas valves feed common 0-100 ccm and 0-20 ccm MFCs. There shall be at least four output ports and one vent port. All ports must be located at the rear of the calibrator.
a. The diluent gas input shall be a 0.25 inch Swagelok® compatible compression fitting.
b. The source gas input fittings are to be 0.125 inch Swagelok® compatible compression fittings.
c. The output and vent ports shall have 0.25-inch Swagelok® compatible compression fittings.
17. The mass flow controller’s accuracy and repeatability from 10 to 90 percent of full scale shall be at least plus or minus 0.5% with a response time to within two (2)% of set-point of 15 seconds or less.
18. All gas handling components shall be constructed of non-reactive materials; Teflon, stainless steel, glass or equivalent.
19. The system shall be able to operate between 10 and 50 degrees Celsius (C).
20. Power requirements 90-115 volts alternating current (VAC) 60 hertz (Hz).
21. The calibrator shall have an RS-232 serial data port (DB-25) to provide for data input and provide information about calibrations being performed, report various operating parameters, etc. All internal programming shall be addressable via these ports for modifications, upgrades, calibration etc.
22. The ozone generator shall be temperature controlled and be insensitive to ambient light and temperature variations.
Special requirements
1. These instruments are to be integrated into an existing complex calibration and data acquisition system (DAS) and must therefore perform and operate exactly as the existing calibrators are already in place.
2. Must be preloaded with hardware specific remote access software (Numaview) that allows for remote connection with virtual interface and data downloading capabilities.
Physical
1. Freestanding cabinet with display and manual key entry at front. Gas and air inlets and outlets at the rear.
2. DB-25 connector (male) and solenoid driver output at the rear. The solenoid driver connector shall mate with a Weidmuller BL series plug 12601-6. The pin out of this connector shall match existing connectors and wiring. The drive for the solenoids shall be open collector type to pull +12 volt to ground with up to 1.5 amp load.
3. The calibrator must include an attached handle for carrying the instrument.
4. The calibrator must be equipped with the Jelight brand ultraviolet lamp for photometer bench (Teledyne Part Number 052400000).
Operating system (internal software).
1. The calibrator shall work with providing levels of test gases and timed sequences of those levels. The levels are defined by two numbers, the first is keyed to the gas produced (1 = NO, 2 = SO2, 3 = CO, 4 = H2S, 5 = NO2, 6 = ozone, 7 = CH4, 8 = NOY). The second number indicates the gas concentration. Example: level 66 is ozone 400 parts per billion (ppb) (at 3 liters per minute [LPM]). Sequences are numbered one to twenty with no significance to the number. Levels are defined by flow and concentration.
Sequences consist of levels, and duration and valving. Gas inputs follow the level first number as consistently as possible i.e. inlet #1 is for NO, #2 is SO2, etc. Of course, since there are more gases used in our system than we have inputs, a single calibrator can only provide four test mixtures (plus ozone).
2. The calibrator can be setup to automatically time and program sequences and have sequences started externally. Levels and sequences can be programmed into the calibrator either remotely or manually and will be retained in the calibrator’s memory. The calibrator shall report the status of the running sequence and level when interrogated.
3. The nomenclature used with the levels and sequences includes additional information called status blocks which provides additional data to the data retrieval system.
4. The calibrator communicates with the data retrieval/control system via a system called “dot commands.” This is a system which involves a higher language for control/reporting.
5. The calibrator must have a built-in reference photometer to assay ozone and can be used to verify ozone production. The gas lines within the calibrator must have pressure sensors and must not have an automated flush mechanism.
6. All units will be delivered with two (2) sets of Operation and Service/Maintenance manuals. The manuals will include at minimum the following: complete operating instructions, circuit descriptions, theory of operation, location of controls and switches, software commands, maintenance, service instructions, schematic diagrams, pneumatic flow charts, lists of replacement parts, warnings, and safety precautions.
7. Warranty period: complete coverage of system, parts and labor for a minimum of two years from date of acceptance.
