About this file

This is an Appendix "B" Statement of Work (SOW) for an X-Ray Transmission Sorter system to be procured by Argonne National Laboratory, a Department of Energy facility operated by UChicago Argonne, LLC.

Argonne seeks a fully integrated, skid-mounted X-ray transmission (XRT)-based sorting system with a firm fixed price not to exceed $650,000. The system must be capable of automated classification and sorting of lithium-ion batteries (various chemistries including alkaline, nickel-cadmium, lithium manganese oxide, lithium iron phosphate, and others), mineral and ore species, colored plastics, and metals. The vendor must deliver a dual-energy X-ray transmission sorter with conveyor feed, automated ejection, radiation and mechanical safety guarding, and an upgradeable design supporting additional detection modalities (color, NIR, inductive, laser, XRF). Critical requirements include open, documented APIs/SDKs enabling programmatic access to sensor data streams, classification algorithms, and configuration parameters without mandatory vendor intervention; Argonne must retain the ability to update, modify, and replace sorting algorithms independently. The vendor shall provide a documented API/SDK, all necessary hardware and software, installation support (remote and/or onsite), and training on operation, safety, maintenance, and algorithm configuration. Electrical requirements shall not exceed 480V/3 Phase/60 Hz. Construction occurs at the vendor's facilities with delivery by August 2026, while installation and training take place at Argonne's facilities in Lemont, Illinois. Acceptance criteria include submission of prefabrication drawings with process and instrument diagrams for approval, delivery of the system without damage per specifications, all required documentation, and confirmation of successful startup. The vendor must disclose any intellectual property restrictions and remote-access capabilities; all software/firmware must comply with Argonne cybersecurity requirements.

Appendix “B”

Argonne National Laboratory Statement of Work X-Ray Transmission Sorter 12/16/2025

1.0 Background

Argonne National Laboratory seeks to acquire an X-ray transmission (XRT)-based sorting system for the automated classification of lithium-ion batteries, minerals, colored plastics, and metals. The system will serve as a flexible research platform enabling user programmability, algorithm development, and experimentation across a wide range of materials related to critical materials supply chains and recycling technologies. The system should provide open access to data and control interfaces to support external analysis and the creation of custom algorithms.

2.0 Scope

This contract covers the design, construction, testing, and delivery of a fully integrated XRT-based sorting system, optionally supplemented with additional detection modalities, at a total cost not exceeding $650,000. The system shall be skid-mounted, self-contained, and include all required sensing, sorting, mechanical, electrical, and software components to operate as a standalone conveyor-based sorting system. The vendor shall provide all necessary hardware, software, documentation, and support for the installation and operation at Argonne National Laboratory.

3.0 Objectives

The primary objective of this procurement is to obtain a flexible and research-capable sorting platform centered on X-ray transmission technology. The system should:

· Support a wide array of material streams, including but not limited to: lithium-ion batteries of various chemistries, mineral ore species, metals, and plastics.

· Enable programmability and user-driven algorithm development, including but not limited to: data capture, classification algorithm modification, integration of new detection modalities, and experimental control.

· Provide open data access and transparent interfaces for Argonne researchers to analyze sensor inputs, system logs, sorting results, and algorithm performance.

· Be upgradeable and extensible, with a design that anticipates future research needs.

4.0 Tasks

· Deliver a fully integrated dual-energy X-ray transmission sorter with conveyor feed and automated ejection system. The system should be upgradable to add additional detection modes if not already included in the original system (Ex, color, NIR, inductive, laser, XRF, etc.).

· The system shall have proven capability of sorting via battery type and chemistry (alkaline vs nickel–cadmium vs lithium manganese oxide vs lithium nickel cobalt manganese oxide vs lithium iron phosphate vs lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide, etc.)

· Demonstrate sorting capability for mineral and ore species.

· Include all required radiation and mechanical safety guarding.

· The system shall expose open, documented interfaces for algorithm control and data access that do not require vendor intervention to use.

· If vendor intervention is required, the vendor shall provide a quote for the estimated cost of such services.

· The system shall allow Argonne access to update, modify, and, if possible, fully replace the sorting algorithm without reliance on the vendor for changes.

· If vendor intervention is required, the vendor shall provide a quote for the estimated cost of such services.

· The vendor shall provide a documented API/SDK that enables:

· Ingest of all sensor data streams.

· Output of classification/sorting decisions from the algorithm.

· Programmatic access to algorithm configuration parameters and operating modes.

· Electrical requirements should not exceed 480V/3 Phase/ 60 Hz

· Provide installation support (remote and/or onsite).

· Provide training at Argonne on operation, safety, maintenance, and algorithm configuration.

5.0 Delivery

· Prefabrication drawings, including a process and instrument diagram, to be submitted for approval prior to commencing construction

· At or before system delivery, the following documents should be provided,

· Process and Instrument Diagram

· System layout, including all connection points and sizes for utilities

· List of all major components and their manufacturers

· Electrical drawings showing all wiring pathways

5.1 Acceptance Criteria

1. Receipt of prefabrication drawings, including process and instrument diagrams, incorporating elements and specifications as outlined in this SOW for Argonne review and approval.

2. Receipt of X-ray sorter and all components without damage and as per approved specifications in SOW, including incorporation of changes agreed to during review by Argonne.

3. Receipt of all documents as listed in the SOW.

4. Confirmation of successful startup

6.0 Government-Owned Property

· Argonne retains full rights to algorithms developed in-house.

· Vendor must disclose any IP restrictions.

7.0 Security

· All software/firmware must meet Argonne cybersecurity requirements.

· Vendor must disclose any remote-access capabilities.

8.0 Place of Performance

Construction will occur at the vendor’s facilities. Installation, training, and startup assistance to be provided at Argonne National Laboratory’s facilities in Lemont, IL.

9.0 Period of Performance

It is expected that the system will be delivered by 08/2026 at the latest. Training and startup assistance to be provided once Argonne has installed the system.
