SUBJECT: Annual Asbestos Report
This memorandum documents actions taken during FY98 to remove asbestos-containing materials from the NOAA Ship OREGON II.
From December, 1997, to June, 1998, the NOAA Ship OREGON II was involved in a Major Repair Period at Bender Shipyard, Mobile, Alabama. Item 09 in the contract specified the removal of asbestos containing bulkhead sheathing from the dry lab and chem lab. Item 18 of the contract specified the removal of asbestos containing overheads in the spaces listed below, with the approximate square footage of removed asbestos containing material listed:
| Chief Engineer’s Stateroom | 80 sq. ft. | ||
| Ship’s Mess Room | 256 sq. ft. | ||
| Stateroom #1 | 45 sq. ft. | ||
| Stateroom #2 | 77 sq. ft. | ||
| Stateroom #3 | 91 sq. ft. | ||
| Stateroom #4 | 70 sq. ft. | ||
| Stateroom #5 | 96 sq. ft. | ||
| Stateroom #6 | 88 sq. ft. | ||
| Stateroom #7 | 96 sq. ft. | ||
| Stateroom #9 | 96 sq. ft. |
Item 19 in the contract specified the removal of asbestos containing overhead panels from the galley. In addition, several additional item requests were added to the contract to remove asbestos from the freezers and generator exhaust insulation.
Following completion of the aforementioned work, the contractor provided documentation in the form of daily project reports, asbestos waste shipment records, and air filter analyses. This documentation is attached. The daily project reports indicate which work was done on a particular day. The total asbestos waste removed and shipped was 39 cubic yards. Air filter analyses were performed in each of the areas where asbestos was removed, and these indicated concentrations less than 0.1 fibers per cubic centimeter in all spaces.
