HABITABILITY MATERIALS LIST

REVISION K (NOVEMBER 1996)

1. This list identifies approved materials for applications authorized by other applicable documents (e.g., General Specifications for Ships of the United States Navy (Gen. Specs.), Naval Ships’ Technical Manual (NSTM), etc.). It is emphasized that this list addresses materials used primarily to enhance shipboard habitability in applications listed below (although the installations frequently introduce additional benefits of safety and/or maintenance aspects).

NOTE: THIS LIST DOES NOT AUTHORIZE THE INSTALLATION OF ANY MATERIAL.

2. Habitability materials and suppliers listed herein are provided for guidance only; this list is not exclusive, i.e., materials not listed are acceptable when specified by other applicable documents (e.g., GEN. SPEC., NSTM, etc.). USE OF SUPPLIERS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS LIST IS NOT PRECLUDED. Only those materials identified by a National Stock Number (NSN) are available in the Naval Supply System. Other sources of given material should be considered when known and in the Government's interest. Users having knowledge of products/suppliers which should be considered for inclusion on the approved list are invited to submit information for evaluation to NAVSEA Code 03M1. Provide all technical data from manufacturer/supplier including, but not limited to:

a.Manufacturer and supplier name and address
b.Identifying nomenclature (brand name, style number, etc.)
c.Intended use and location (e.g.: deck covering, crew's messroom; bulkhead sheathing, officer's wardroom; upholstery, Captain's cabin; etc.)
d.Manufacturer's statement of conformance to applicable Fed, or Mil Specs, and fire test data in accordance with MILSTD1623.

Do not submit samples for testing unless specifically requested by NAVSEA.

3. Applicable material specifications are cited when they exist; for a comprehensive listing, consult MILSTD1623, "Fire Performance Requirements and Approved Specifications for Interior Finish Materials and Furnishing (Naval Shipboard Use)". Specifications or Commercial Item Descriptions are under preparation for materials not presently covered. In addition to other performance requirements, materials used on shipboard must meet applicable fire performance requirements of MILSTD1623. When procuring materials, a written certificate of conformity shall be provided by the manufacturer, regardless of whether the manufacturer has been identified in the Habitability Materials List.

4. Questions concerning habitability materials can be referred to:

NOTES: Fire hazard is magnified by multiple layering of deck covering. Accordingly, the following guidance should be followed:

1. Carpet shall not be installed over padding, other layers of carpet or deck tile. Carpets shall be installed over a steel or aluminum deck primed with an epoxy primer, Formula 150, MILP24441, in accordance with Chapter 631 of the Naval Ships Technical Manual. The carpet may be installed by the tackless method, or cemented to the deck with an adhesive conforming to MILA21016 or other NAVSEA approved equivalent. The adhesive shall be applied continuously over the contact surface. The carpet shall cover the entire deck except that it shall be fitted around all permanently installed furniture. Exposed edges shall be bound or a CRES or aluminum tiedown strip shall be installed to tie down the edges of the carpet in foot traffic areas where the carpet abuts other deck coverings. (Further installation details are provided in NSTM Chapter 634).

2. Do not install deck tile over more than one existing layer of approved deck tile. All nonapproved tile should be removed to bare deck, and replaced with approved tile. Multiple layers of approved deck tile should be removed to the original layer, i.e., if bottom layer is of approved material it need not be removed. Removal of all nonapproved deck tile and removal of excess multiple layers of approved deck tile should be accomplished during next routine replacement of existing deck covering. Do not sand an existing layer of deck tile when installing a second layer.

3. Cosmetic Polymeric deck covering shall be installed directly over primed steel decks or approved underlay materials only. MULTIPLE LAYERS OF POLYMERIC DECK COVERINGS ARE PROHIBITED. When applying new color layers of color flake type deck coverings, original color layers shall be removed to expose either the base coat of the material, the primed steel deck, or underlayment. In no instance shall polyurethane deck coverings exceed 1/2-inch total thickness, and in no instance shall epoxy deck coverings exceed 1/2-inch total thickness.

D. Furniture and Furniturerelated Items. All shipboard furniture shall be selected in accordance with the U.S. Navy Shipboard Furniture Catalog, (NAVSEA Publication No. S9600ADGTP010, Publication Stock No. 0910LP7978900). Information concerning approved shipboard furniture may be obtained from this catalog. This information supersedes that of previous catalogs and Section 2090 of the Forces Afloat Shopping Guide. For information, furniture can only be manufactured using the following materials:

1. Metals (for structural components of furniture).

a. Aluminum in accordance with Mil. Spec. MILF902

b. Steel in accordance with Mil. Spec. MILF243

2. Metal coating and plating. Cadmium plating, a process commonly used in the past and cited in the two specifications above was prohibited by NAVSEA memorandum 6101D/KJP 9074 Ser 165 of 16 May 1978. The memorandum lists two alternative processes:

a. Coating, aluminum, low vapor deposited, Mil. Spec. MILC83488.

b. Coating immersion zinc flake/chromate dispersion, Mil. Spec. MILC87115.

3. Upholstery, padding, and cushioning. Pads and cushions shall be of lowsmoke foam in accordance with Mil. Spec. MILR20092, type II, class 5, obtainable from:
