About this file

This technical drawing provides instructions for non-Department of Defense entities to install locking pellets and conduct torque testing on threaded fasteners. Entities must manufacture pellets to a light interference fit and cut them flush with the fastener thread. Quality assurance inspectors must verify pellet size and witness on-site torque tests, where fasteners must exceed the minimum breakaway torque specified. Fasteners failing tests may be retested once before disqualification. Threads cannot show damage or pellet hole elongation.

The related federal contract opportunity solicits proposals to produce Monel components per applicable drawings. The Naval Sea Systems Command seeks a contractor to manufacture various components fully compliant with part drawings and required contract data requirements lists. The contractor must produce the items in accordance with the scope of work.

Purpose:

This drawing provides instructions for installation of self-locking pellet and torque testing of threaded fasteners by Non-DoD Entities. Instructions per this drawing are in accordance with requirements of UIPI 5050-904B

Pellet Installation & Torque Testing Procedure:

1. The vendor shall manufacture a locking pellet in accordance with the applicable drawing or contract.

Pellet must be sized to create a light interference fit with the pellet hole.

2. The vendor shall install a pellet in each fastener.

3. The vendor shall use a sharp knife to cleanly cut the locking pellet approximately flush with the fastener thread major diameter.

4. The vendor shall measure the fastener diameter at the pellet. This diameter must be of the size and within the tolerance given in the applicable drawing or contract. Quality Assurance Inspectors from the Naval Foundry and Propeller Center must be on-site at the vendor’s location to verify the results.

5. The vendor shall perform a torque test on all pelletized fasteners as follows:

a) Insert the fastener into an appropriate nut or test fixture until the pellet is fully engaged. The threads of the nut/test fixture shall be of the same nominal size and thread class as the fastener being tested.

b) Using a calibrated torque wrench, measure the breakaway torque required to remove the fastener.

The required minimum breakaway torque value will be given in in the applicable drawing or contract.

Quality Assurance Inspectors from the Naval Foundry and Propeller Center must be on-site at the vendor’s location to witness the tests.

Note: If a test proves unsatisfactory for these requirements, remove the pellet, inspect the part for damage, install a new pellet in accordance with this procedure and retest the fastener. This retest may be performed once before disqualifying the part.

6. Inspect the fastener threads for any damage. Noticeable distortion or scratches deep enough to reduce the efficiency of the threads, or any elongation of the pellet hole, shall be considered a failure of the self– locking element.
