SAFETY SUMMARY
This summary contains this Technical Manual.
~ll warnings and cautions given throughout They are repeated here for emphasis.
- Definitions
WARNING
An operation or maintenance procedure, practice, statement, etc. which, if not strictly observed, injury or death of pe=sonnel.
CAUTION
condition, could result
An operation or maintenance procedure, practice, condition, statement, etc. which, if not strictly observed, could result in damage to, or dest=uction of, equipment or loss of mission effectiven~ss.
WARNING
in
Ensure gear and engine are tagged out of service and main engine turning gear shaft locking device and gear brake are engaged, prior to working on rotating components.
Kill power to cable terminal box prior to opening it.
Kill electric power to lube oil pump motor prior to working on pump.
CAUTION
The power supply of t~e stand-by lube oil pump is to be maintained to ensure ~he oil supply of the gearing in case of sudden manoeuvres.
The compressed air supply of the two clutches has to be isolated to prevent false connections, when the compressed air supply is reestablished.
Temporarily cover the inspection holes after opening to prevent things from falling :nto the gearing
If the wear pattern reveals a. bearing surface reduced by more than 20 , compared to the original value or if the bearing surface is clearly co~centrated to one side, the input or output shaft is displaced
Fill pump with gearing oil prior to installation. The pump must not run dry.
xi
SAFETY SUKKARY
CAUTION (cont.)
Do not use a steel brush. Do not blowout tubes by means of steam.
Clean up all oil leaks.
Do not use coated abrasives.
Pay attention to extreme cleanliness during assembly.
At the beginning of the test run, operate diesel engines with low speeds only.
Continuously check the gearing temperatures.
Do not damage metal sealing faces
Protect bearing faces and teeth against damage.
Mainta-in extreme cleanliness during assembly of the gearing.
Pay attention to the central feed line during removal. The central feed line protrudes from the gearing flange.
During installation, pay attention to the central feed line.
Do not roll tubes which are not leaking as it needlessly thins the tube wall.
Do not allow lifting device to contact lubrication components.
monitoring equipment and cabaling during lfting.
Do not use coated abrasives.
Metal chips at the magnetic plugs indicate damage at the gearing.
Keep stop cocks of one cooler open.
Do not allow lifting device to contact lubrication components) monitoring equipment and cabling during lifting.
Do not use coated abrasives.
Pay attention to extreme cleanliness during as.embly.
At the beginning of the test run, operate diesel engines with low speeds only.

1.2 EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION
The oceanographic survey ship of T-AGS 39-40 class with the yard numbers Bethlehem Hulls 4667 und 4668 are equipped with a gearing of type GVE 2050 A reducing the speed of the main propulsion diesel engine from max. 514 rpm to max. 140 rpm. The power trans ferred is 2 x 12500 HP.
Gearing and propelling diesel engines are arranged on a common base. The propelling diesel engines are connected by means of a highly elastic friction clutch of type Mpneumaflex KAP 410 Mod.
1000 M to the gearing. The output shaft (propeller shaft) is connected through a flexible coupling to the gearing.
The gearing is a spur gear with single-reduction. The input shafts and the output shaft lie in a horizontal plane.
The housing is a welded steel structure braced at particularly loaded pOints, e.g. in the bearing area.
The input pinions and the output gear rim are provided with a helical gearing. The tooth surface of the input pinions is case hardened and subsequently ground. The output gear rim consist of highly heat-treated steel.
The input and output shafts are supported in slide bearings. The axial force of the output shaft are absorbed by an axial segment thrust bearing with tilting and self-aligning thrust segments.
The axial forces of the input shafts are absorbed by axial sliding rings.
The gearing base is equipped with an oil pan ensuring an air-free take-in of the oil by means of swash bulkheads in case of in clined positions of the ship. The oil supply to the gearing is made by screw pumps.
The motor-driven lube pumps draw oil from the reduction gear sump and deliver it to the pressure headers. These headers supply the bearings and the gear tooth sprays at the mesh points.
Before putting the reduction gear into operation, one of the two motor driven pumps will be started as the lead pump. The second pump will be placed in stand-by mode. If the lead pump fails, pressure switchwes P-19 or P-16 will actuate the stand-by pump at a falling pressure of 27 psig (see Fig. 2-1).
The oil is cleaned in the suction filters and in a reversible duplex filter and cooled in two oil coolers arranged in parallel. Fresh water from the fresh water cooling system of the machine plant is used as coolant.
1-3
REDUCTION GEAR AND CLUTCHES
The oil pumps, the filters, the oil coolers, interconnected by piping. Non-return valves, pressure control valves are installed in the the oil circulation.
and the gearing are butterfly valves and piping to control
The oil supply system and the plain bearings are monitored by pressure switches, temperature switches, pressure gages, thermometers, thermometers with oil circulation indicators and a level controller.
The electric pulses of monitoring units are supplied through connecting cables to a terminal box located on the gearing and from there to the monitoring system of the propulsion system.

1. 3.3 SEQUENCE OF THE REVERSING MANOEUVRE
- Shtlt off fuel supply of diesel engine(s).
- Allow vessel to slow down until an engine speed of 180 rpm (one diesel engine) or 200 rpm (two diesel engines) is reached.
- Disengageclutch(es) and switch on brake, bring propeller shaft to zero rpm.
, - 5
MAIN PROPULSION REDUCTION GEAR AND CLUTCHES
Shift camshaft(s) of diesel engine(s) to opposite operation and start engine(s)in opposite direction.
- Bring engine speed to 180 rpm (one diesel engine) or to 200 rpm e· (two diesel eng ines) •
- Switch off brake and engage clutch (es) synchronously.
Note
When engaging clutch{es) the propeller shaft must have about zero rpm and max. permissible ship speed is 4 knots (8 knots)
- Do not increase fuel before completion of slippage of clutch(es).
1 .3.4 INTERLOCKS
The clutch(es) cannot be engaged, if the brake is engaged. The interlocking is made by means of the pneumatic control uni~s "70" of the clutches (see Chapter 3.3.2).'
The brake cannot be engaged, if one or both of the clutches .are engaged. This interlocking is made by means of the hydraulic supply system of the brake (see Chapter 3.4.3).
