3PNEUMAFLEX KA
• Spielfrei, kein Verschleiß an spielbehafteten Bauteilen mög-lich
• Sanfter, sehr gut steuerbarer Einschaltvorgang
• Überlastschutz der Antriebsanlage bei Verwendung einer Schlupf-Überwachungseinrichtung (siehe Seite 10)
• Kupplungen der Bauart KAP sind senkrecht ausbaubar
Experience from some 5,000 installations that have been oper-ating the PNEUMAFLEX clutch since 1964 has led to the devel-opment of the technologically advanced highly elastic PNEU- MAFLEX clutch.
The PNEUMAFLEX clutch is a combination unit comprising double conical friction clutch and highly elastic coupling. The clutching components comprise two inner friction cones which are pressed against two outer friction conical faces via the pneumatically actuated clutch cylinder.
The elastic part comprises rubber elements arranged in parallel which were completely optimized enhancing the coupling's re-liability and performance significantly.
PNEUMAFLEX KA clutches are especially suited for use in diesel engine propulsion systems and installations where torsional vi-bration must be taken into account.
Due to the high torsional flexibility of the rubber elements, PNEUMAFLEX KA clutches shift resonance (torsional vibration) between the natural frequencies of the system and the excit-ing frequencies of the driving and driven machines from the operational speed range. Due to their high damping qualities they also reduce the residual vibration amplitude and thus pro-tect the valuable plant.
Moreover, the clutch compensates center mismatch, axial as well as angular misalignment of the shafts and machinery ele-ments to be connected (engines, gearboxes, generators etc.)
within a predetermined tolerance range. Additionally, the rub-ber elements isolate structure-borne noise effectively.
Main advantages of PNEUMAFLEX Clutches
• Combination of a dry friction clutch and highly elastic coupling without short-lived idle bearing system
• Complete separation of primary and secondary sides
• Backlash-free, no wear of components subject to backlash
• Smooth and easily controllable engaging operation
• Protects the propulsion system against overloads if a slip monitoring unit is used (see Page 10)
• Clutches of type KAP can be vertically removed.

Description
Aufbau und Funktion Design and Function
The outer part 9 of the PNEUMAFLEX clutch comprises tapered jackets and and split spacer ring 11.
The clutch hub 12, rubber elements 5, supporting ring 14 and torque limit rings 2 or, if the clutch is not provided with a tor-sional limiting device, spacer rings 4 form the inner part of the clutch.
On the outside rubber elements 5 are connected to friction cones 6, clutch piston 10 and clutch cylinder 7. On the inner side, rubber elements are attached to clutch hub 12 via feath-er keys.
The compressed air line extends through clutch hub and, via hose line 13, has a connection with clutch piston 10.
Clutches of size KA 102 and KA 112 have only two instead of four rubber elements.

Design and Function
The clutch operates on compressed air which upon actuation is led to the clutch cylinder 7 via a rotating air supply system through line 3 and hose line 13. When the piston space has been filled, cylinder 7 and piston 10 move friction cones 6 with the attached friction linings 8 axially pressing them against the friction surface of tapered jackets 9.
Friction linings 8 are attached to friction cones 6 and thus in-sulate the inward flow of heat while the frictional heat is read-ily dissipated into the surrounding air via clutch casing 9.
For clutch disengagement, clutch cylinder 7 is vented thus causing the friction cones 6 to return to their initial position by action of the resilience force of the axially prestressed rubber elements 5.
The movable internals rest on supporting ring 14. Ih this way, the clutch internals are correctly located both axially and radi-ally in relation to hub 12 even when the clutch is disengaged.
A contactless running of the clutch is thus ensured.
In the event of a compressed air failure, the PNEUMAFLEX clutch can be engaged/disengaged at standstill via the emer-gency actuating system 1.

Numerous theoretical factors, results from extensive in-house testing and tests by recognized institutes as well as our com-prehensive practical experience form the design basis in the manufacture of this clutch.
Size Selection The selection of the correct coupling size is governed by the rated torque of the prime mover. The rated power in kW (PN) and the rated speed in rpm (nN) have to be inserted (see page 18, calculation). The correct coupling size can then be selected from the "Technical Data" section (page 21). Service factors are not needed because of the great margin of safety the coupling provides.
Determination of the suitable rubber element hardness is based on the results of the torsional vibration analysis. All the required parameters are to be taken from the "Technical Da-ta" section or applicable installation drawing, if necessary. For a torsional vibration analysis we are prepared to offer assis-tance based on know-how from 30 years of experience.
Calculation of the Engaging Operation For the clutch size selected on the basis of input power and speed an analysis of the clutch engagement work is made by us with determination of the optimum slip time and maximum admissible engagement speed.
To enable us to make these calculations the following particu-lars – based on clutch speed – are required:
• mass moment of inertia of the primary clutch side in kgm2
• mass moment of inertia of the secondary side in kgm2
• break-away torque of the secondary side in kNm Heat-resistance cast steel is the material used for the clutching part of the unit so that extraordinary high engagement speed rates are allowable.
In case a clutch is to operate at extremely high engagement speed, eg if clutching takes place at rated engine speed, we recommend that KAP . . 2 clutches be used (Page 17). Dimen-sions and technical data of these models are available on re-quest.
Classification PNEUMAFLEX clutches are approved without restrictions by all known classification societies for use in marine main propul-sion and PTO systems. The rubber elements are type tested and the respective clutch materials – e.g. GGG 40 or steel for torque-transmitting parts – selected in line with the classifica-tion societies' specifications.
Moreover, if additional ice class requirements are to be met, it is recommended that the clutch size selection be established by us.

Flansch – Flansch Welle – Welle Flansch – Welle
All clutches of type KAP can be removed vertically after re-moving the flange bolts and, for that reason, should preferably be employed.
Clutch type KAQ, on the other hand, can only be removed vertically if one of the adjacent machines is moved axially or dismantled.
To satisfy any specific mounting requirements, various clutch types are available with connections:
flange to flange shaft to shaft flange to shaft
Torsion limiting devices Some classification societies have prescribed torsion limiting devices for emergency operation of couplings in main marine propulsion systems driving a single propeller. This torsion limit-ing device allows static transmission of the nominal torque of the coupling. The changed torsional vibration situation has to be taken into account.
The following PNEUMAFLEX clutches have been shown with-out torque limiting device. Models provided with torque limiter have identical dimensions and weights.

Normally, the clutch is equipped with the standard com-pressed air connection irrespective of whether power is fed in via the external clutch parts.
However, should it be impossible to introduce air through the internal clutch parts end a special air connection has to be fit-ted.
In applications where there is no room for the air supply tube of the standard air connection of the KAP clutches an air con-nection can be furnished that comes without air supply tube.

TN = Antriebsnenndrehmoment (kNm) PN = Antriebsdauerleistung (kW) nN = Antriebsnenndrehzahl (min-1) TkN = Kupplungsnenndrehmoment (kNm)
TWi = Wechseldrehmoment der Ordnung i (kNm) Kfi = Multiplikationsfaktor der Ordnung i
The designations and definitions given in this section are based on DIN 740, part 2.
Nominal Torque TkN
The nominal torque TkN relates to the continuous power PN of the prime mover at rated speed nN.
TN = input torque (kNm) PN = continuous input power (kW) nN = input speed (rpm) TkN = rated torque of clutch (kNm)
Marginal, maximum and short-time peak outputs of the prime mover according to DIN 6271 need not be taken into account in the clutch selection.
Maximum Torque Tkmax
During transient operating states such as starting impacts and passing through the resonance range, it is allowable to reach with limited frequency but not exceed the admissible maxi-mum torque values Tkmax indicated. As far as generator drives are concerned the maximum torque is limited to 4.5 times the specified rated torque in view of the very briefly occurring gen-erator short circuit torque.
Although the static rupturing torque of the rubber elements is greater than 9 times rated torque, frequently occurring high torque impacts will nevertheless impair the useful life of the rubber elements.
Continuous Alternating Torque TkW
The admissible continuous alternating torque TkW must not be exceeded permanently by periodic torque oscillations superim-posed on the rated or basic torque.
The values specified apply to a frequency of 10 Hz. In the case of other frequencies the multiplying factor Kf resulting from the diagram shall be used to determine permissible values. If several frequencies are superposed upon each other the multi-plying factor Kf res is to be found to reflect the individual fre-quency proportions as per the formula given below and used to determine the permissible alternating torque which must then be compared with the synthesis alternating torque.
TWi = alternating torque of the i order (kNm) Kfi = multiplying factor of the i order

PW = auftretende Dämpfungsleist.
TWi = Wechseldrehmoment der Ordnung i (kNm) fi = Frequenz der Ordnung i
Damping Power PkW
With every vibration amplitude part of the kinetic energy is converted into thermal energy due to the damping characteris-tics of the elastomeric material. The damping power applicable to the relevant operating state is to be found according to the following simplified formula and must be compared with the admissible damping power.
PW = damping power arising TWi = alternating torque of the i order (kNm) fi = i order frequency
The data indicated apply to an ambient temperature of up to 303 K (30° C). In the event of higher ambient temperatures tU the permissible values shall be multiplied by factor F.
Dynamic Torsional Stiffness CTdyn
The dynamic torsional stiffness CTdyn is defined as the differen-tial function of the clutch rated torque determined via the tor-sional angle under dynamic load conditions.
The dynamic torsional stiffness indicated relates to an average rubber temperature of 45° C, an alternating torque of 0,25 • TkN and a frequency of 10 Hz.
Due to the physical properties of the rubber material the dy-namic torsional stiffness varies according to the clutch temper-ature and alternating torque parameters and, to a lesser de-gree, the vibration frequency. More details in this respect are available on request.
Generally speaking, the dynamic torsional stiffness decreases as the alternating torque and rubber temperature values in-crease.
As a result of the variations occurring in the properties of the natural rubber material a tolerance range of ± 15 % is to be observed with regard to dynamic torsional stiffness.
Relative Damping ψ
The relative damping ψ is a dimension describing the relation between the damping work AD performed during a vibration cycle and the elastic deformation work Ael that has meanwhile occurred.
The relative damping value indicated relates to an average rub-ber temperature of 45° C. As the temperature rises the relative damping value decreases.
Radial and Axial Stiffness Cr, Ca
The radial stiffness Cr is defined as first differential function of the radial restoring force determined via the radial displa-cement. Analogously, the axial stiffness Ca is defined as the first differential function of the axial restoring force determi-ned via the axial displacement of the clutch parts.
The stiffness values indicated relate to an average rubber temperature of 45¡ C. At temperatures below 45¡ C the stiff-ness values are higher, above 45¡ C lower than the indicat-ed values.

Luftverbrauch
Radial and Axial Displacement ∆Kr, ∆Ka
Values indicated relate to admissible displacement during op-eration with the clutch being engaged. The amount of dis-placement results from alignment tolerances, compensation, thermal expansion, settlement, foundation movement and dy-namic mass forces arising in the propulsion system.
The amount of displacement the coupling has to compensate between input and output side causes flexing work in the elas-tomeric material as well as restoring forces acting on adjacent bearing locations. To keep these effects to a minimum perma-nently existing displacement should be as low as possible.
With regard to briefly and separately occurring displacement, particularly with machinery mounted flexibly, the specified ad-missible displacement values can be doubled.
Maximum Speed nmax
The maximum admissible speed of the internal clutch parts with the clutch being disengaged is determined by multiplying the specified speeds by a factor 0.8. In case of higher speeds, please consult the Factory.
Ambient Temperatures tU
The rubber elements are suitable for unrestricted operational use at ambient temperatures ranging between + 5° C (278 K) and + 70° C (343 K). Nevertheless, the impact of higher ambient temperatures on the damping power PkW must be du-ly taken into consideration.
When mounting protective guards on the PNEUMAFLEX clutch care must be taken that the rubber surfaces are sufficiently ventilated.
The admissible storage temperatures of the clutch range be-tween - 30° C (243 K) and + 80° C (353 K).
