SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
The following are general safety steps. These should be understood and followed at all times:
a. All circuits not known to be dead must be considered alive at all times.
b. Do not wear loose clothing when working with rotating machines.
c. Do not use metal tools or objects when working near electricity.
d. Be certain you are not grounded when using test meters or making adjustments.
e. Shut off power before making any connections.
f. When using a meter, select a range higher than ex pected •
. g. Do not use test equipment known to be in poor condi tion.
RESUSCITATION
A high voltage is required to operate deck machinery.
Those working with the motor and control(s) should know modern methods of resuscitation. Such informa tion may be obtained from the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery.
WARNING
The National Safety Council, Accident Prevention Manual for Industrial Opera tions, 7th Edition and other recognized safety sources make a common point: "All employees working with cranes or hoists or assis.ting in hooking or arranging a load should be instructed to keep out from under load. From a safety stand point, one factor is paramount: conduct all lifting operations in such a manner that if there were an equipment failure, no personnel would be injured. This means keep out from under raised load and keep out of the line of force of any load.·"
GENERAL
lQ H.P. DECK CAPSTAN
MODEL X-1566MS
The capstan consists of a vertical, 12" diameter head mounted on top of a fabricated-steel gear case, housing a primary helical and final worm gear reduction running on anti-friction bearings in an oil bath. The watertight electric motor is flange-mounted integral with the gear case, and is rated for 10 H.P. at 1800 RPM. It is fitted with an integral, spring-applied, electrically-released, disc brake rated for 35 lb. ft. A reversing, watertight, motor starter, with pushbuttons, is mounted on the capstan housing, or on deck adjacent to the capstan.
For the general arrangement of 'gearing and identification of parts, refer to Assembly Dwg. A-14955, enclosed in the back of this manual.
RATING
The capstan' is rated to pull 5,000 lbs. at" 48 feet per minute. The electric motor is rated for 1/2 hour at full load •
INSTALLATION
Mount the capstan on a flat and level foundation, and secure with four (4) one-inch diameter bolts. Shim, where necessary, to avoid distortion of the case. Refer to the motor connection diagram for proper connections to the controller. The brake has three (3) leads, and these must be wired to the brake terminals in the controller.
LUBRICATION
The gear case is provided with a fill plug on top of the case. Before starting, fill to the level of the plug on the side of the case opposite the motor with an AGMA No.
7 compound oil. This is a cylinder oil with acidless tallow additives - approximately 135 SSU at .2100 viscosity. If the ambient temperature falls below 150 , use an AGMA ,6 EP oil. Oil should be changed after the first 150 hours of operation, and annually thereafter.
The upper gear case bearing is grease lubricated. It will need only one or two "shots" from a pressure gun once a month. Use a good grade, water resistant grease, such as Lubriplate's Marine Lube "A" •
OPERATION
After the unit has been properly installed, wired and checked out (run at no load), it is ready for service.
Proceed ~follows:
1. Make sure the deck area around the unit is unobstructed and that an area is available to coil the line as it comes off the head.
2. Take four orfive·turns of the line around the head, starting at the bottom and working up so that the free end comes off the top.
CADTIOiM
Make certain the line lies smoothly on the head and does not cross itself.
3. Energize the motor on slow speed in the desired direction.
4. Tail the free end of the line off the top of the head.
5. When tailing off the line, make certain it falls in a clear area so as not tofoul'the operator or line coming in. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT ANOTHER HAND BE AVAILABLE TQ-PLAKE OUT THE LINE AS IT COMESIOFP-THE HEAD. -- --- --- ---- -- -- --- ---
6. After the slack is out of the line, the motor can be shifted to high speed (if provided) by pushing the high speed control for the same direction of rotation.
WARl!lDilG
Never touch or go near the loaded end of the line as it approaches the bottom skirt of the head.
7. To stop the capstan, push the STOP button, or return the master switch or other control to OFF.
8. Line can be paid out in either of two ways:
a~. stop the motor and operate in the reverse direction, or
b. Release the tension on the tail end of the line and allow the load to slip the line backwards around the head.
When paying out line, be careful not to allow the line to become en tangled with the operator, as it could pull the man into the head.
Extreme caution must be used to make sure the operator's hands are not caught between the line and the capstan head as the line pays out.
9. To secure the unit, push the STOP button, or return the master switch to OFF.
10. Remove the line from the capstan head, or secure the free end to a bitt or cleat if still loaded.
11. Pull the disconnect switch on the controller.
MAINTENANCE
The capstan should require no.maintenance other than routine lubrication and' painting, when required.
DISASSEMBLY ~ Reference Dwg. A-14955
Should disassembly become necessary, first remove the head cover (25) and retaining washer (16). Next, pull the head (15) off the shaft. The motor can be removed by taking out the four bolts. Support it while pulling away from the gear case to free it from the pilotted bore.
Take care not to damage the pinion on the motor shaft.
Unbolt the gear case cover (32) and lift by the tapped hole in the end of the shaft. The entire main shaft assembly will come out. Note that there are shims (4) under the bearing caps (13) and (5). These adjust the end play of the Timken bearings and, also, center the gear on the worm. Tag top and bottom shim packs.
To remove the worm shaft, take off the bearing retainer
(17) and the gear retainer (29). The shaft must then be pulled or tapped through the gear (27).
To reassemble, reverse the above procedure. Replace shim packs as noted.

Ll II L] 11 21 II l2 II 11 n LI II l3 I 11 11 , Estimating Trip Time GENERAL: Estimating trip limes for a bimetallic overload relay makes it poS~ible to ~redict the tripping characteristics (performance) over a wide range of averCurrenl conditions. Estimating trip limes can be used where the overload is required to trIp within a specific lime or to confirm overload relays are operating properly_
CURRENT SETTING: The current selling is the value whIch Is set on the overload relay based on the load amperes and service lactor.
This is NOT to be confused with the current rating of the device.
CURRENT RATING:'The current rating is the minimum value of continuously applied current thai will uftimately cause the overload' relay to trip.
AMBIENT TEMPERATURE COMPENSATION: Si""e an overload relay provides ambient temperature compensation as.stan dard, there is no need to adjust the current selling lor varialion in the ambient.
Example: An overload relay'(LRFD09301) has been subjected to.48 AMP after it had been running at a fuJI load current of 0.12 Amps for a long period of time. Determine the trip time.
. . .48 Solution: Determine the multiple of the current setting. Muillple of current setting = -:::; 4 .
. 12
Since the overload relay had been running for a long period of lime, we can consider the bimetal elements to be in '8 hot slate.
Look down to the appropriate graph (LR1·00910.oSQ), and determine trip time from the dotted line (hot state). In this example, the trip time would be approximately 5.5 seconds.

Industrial Control Transformers
Industrial Control Transformers are used to reduce supply voltages to 120 V. or lower for the operation of electro· magnetic devices such as contactors, solenoids, relays, and timers. They are especially designed to accommodate the momentary current inrush caused when electromag· netic components are energized ... without sacrificing secondary voltage stability beyond practical limits.
Acme Electric Industrial Control Transformers are dry type step down transformers with the secondary control circuit isolated from the primary line circuit to assure maximum safety. These transformers and other components are usually mounted within an enclosed control box or control panel which have push button stations independently grounded as recommended by electrical safety codes.
Voltage regulation in the Acme Electric line of transformers exceeds standards recommended by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association. Secondary circuit voltage drop occurring between no·load and momentary overload remains exceptionally low. This excellent secondary circuit voltage regulation of Acme Electric Industrial Control Transformers assures reliable operation of electromagnetic components and may permit the use of a smaller and less expen· sive Industrial Control Transformer.
Meet Applicable Standards Acme Electric Industrial Control Transformers meet or exceed these standards:
UL, CSA, NEMA, ANSI, Automotive Standards.
Acme Electric Industrial Control Transformers are UL recognized under the Component Program of Underwriters' LaboratoriM, Inc .. 50 VA through 5000 VA. File E 12547. All Industrial Control transformers in this catalog are listed by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) as certified.
