water alone at the end. Use a cotton cloth to wipe dry. Do not immerse the artifact in the cleaning solution.
4. Remove the various labels, stickers, and tape remnants because the adhesives within these products often promote corrosion and etching of finishes. This may require using wooden applicator sticks or scalpels to remove the majority of the adhesive, followed by the application of cotton swabs dampened with either warm water or an appropriate solvent to remove remaining residues.
5. Reduce excessive corrosion by probing with wooden or plastic applicator sticks. Use suction from a HEPA vacuum as noted above to contain loose corrosion products. Perform localized cleaning of corroded areas with water method (for powdery corrosion) or solvent method (for waxy corrosion), as described above.
6. Important Note: Perform testing of all cleaning methods mentioned above prior to full-scale application to ensure surfaces are not adversely affected by the treatment.
VISUAL DOCUMENTATION
(Left) In spite of heavy losses to the paint system, this painted steel wheel is considered to be in good condition. (Right) Note embossed mesh accretion, which is transferring due to reflective tape (presumed to be from contact with the life buoys) pressed against the wheel at some point in time.
(Left and right) A chrome-platted brass wheel with loss of the plating material (most likely the result of use).
111 MARAD HERITAGE ASSETS CONSERVATION SURVEY AND REPORT
Two painted brass wheels in fair condition. (Left) This one has clear evidence of multiple painting campaigns, with deterioration of all. (Right) Heavily deteriorated paint coating system, with active flaking and losses. Note tarnishing on exposed areas of brass.
(Left) A fiber twine-wrapped metal wheel in good condition. (Right) The paint drips could be an indication that this is a later paint applicaton and not the original coating.
(Left and right) A painted brass wheel in poor condition, with almost complete loss of finishes, heavy corrosion, and bent spoke end.

OBJECT GROUP Wheels, Wooden
NUMBER OF ITEMS 50
BRIEF DESCRIPTION
In general, this object group consists of ship wheels constructed of finished wood and brass.
Occasionally, iron is found as part of the makeup of the wheels. The main wood species used in their construction appears to be teak and oak. King spokes are frequently identified with either rope or twine knots, or with grooves carved into the wood. One ship’s wheel was found to have a lead medallion embedded into the front and at least two others had with brass medallions in them.
While one wheel has a steering-assisting Brodie knob or handle installed on the front, another has a hole where one may have been installed at one time. Few wheels were found to have nave plates.
The average wheel diameter is approximately 43 inches; however, the largest wheel has a 64-inch diameter. Veneer inlay has been applied to both the front and back of many of the wheels to conceal the metal screws used in their construction. The wood finish for many of the wheels appears to be clear to semi-transparent colored varnish or shellac.
GENERAL CONDITIONS
All wooden ship wheels appear to be whole and sound. Four were found to be in such good condition that they appear to be new. Common observations on the condition of each wheel tend to be the following: wear of finishes and wood from use; greasy deposits and residues (which appear heaviest over and around the hubs); dust and dirt; mottling of finishes due to alligatoring; paint accretions in the form of splatters, drips, and brush marks; presence of old polishing compound residues (which can promote corrosion); application of labels, stickers, and tape; applied writing in felt marker and pencil; dents, gouges, scratches, and abrasions; embossing of finishes from silver reflective tape or nylon rope due to prolonged contact with life ring buoys; and remnants of mud dauber nests.
For the majority of the wooden ship wheels, the woodwork exhibits minimal cracking or opening in the joints. Lifting or popping of the inlaid veneer is minimal except for two wheels where moderate damage to the veneer was found. For one of these wheels, the loss to the inlaid veneer is significant.
Additionally, many of the wheels have an unknown clear coating, which has become fouled with dust, dirt, and grease. It is unclear whether this is due to the application of oil coatings (such as linseed oil) during past maintenances. This coating may be responsible for the alligatored appearance of some of the wheels.
EXISTING STORAGE
Currently, most of the collection is set on their spoke ends in an unpainted and non-padded wooden racking system that sits directly on the floor. The system helps to keep the wheels separated from each other and prevent surface damage, which would occur if the wheels were leaned against one another. Other wheels are housed vertically along with metal ship wheels within large non-archival cardboard boxes. One large wooden ship wheel has been set on its spoke ends, leaning against a wall. None of the wheels is covered to prevent against dust accumulations. Noticeable accumulations of dust and debris were found at the base of the racking system.
114 MARAD HERITAGE ASSETS CONSERVATION SURVEY AND REPORT
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR STORAGE
1. Elevate wheel rack off of the floor to allow wheels to rest in the framing of the rack rather than on their spokes. Elevation of the rack will also allow for cleaning underneath it. Some alteration to the rack structure by the addition of brackets should be performed to enable wheels to rest more on the wheel rim and less on the spokes. Ideally, a bracket system should have four points of contact with the wheel rim – two on the exterior bottom and two on the interior side of the rim at top.
2. Clean and paint the unfinished wooden rack with two to three coats of a latex paint to seal the wood.
3. Add Ethafoam cushioning to storage furniture to pad areas of contact and prevent abrasions.
4. Devise storage racking or hanging system for wheels that are currently free standing or stacked within boxes.
5. Drape or wrap wheels with 4-mil polyethylene sheeting to prevent dust accumulations.
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CONSERVATION TREATMENT
Given the whole and sound nature of many of the wheels, none were found to be in urgent need of conservation. In fact, with little effort four wheels can be immediately displayed. Despite the presence of alligatoring within many of the finishes, few wheels exhibit active flaking and loss of the finishes. This is more of a concern about aesthetic appearance rather than one of condition. Re-adhering lifting veneer is not required at this time and should be considered if the item is to be displayed or if the veneer continues to lift as a failure of the original adhesive method. Similarly, polishing of brass components and refinishing of wood should be performed as deemed necessary for curatorial purposes due to display requirements.
The main conservation need for many of the wheels is general cleaning to remove dirt and greasy residues, which should be performed prior to upgrading storage. As such, the following immediate conservation treatment steps are recommended:
1. Clean away loose surface dirt and dust using natural bristle brushes and light suction from a HEPA vacuum. Wrap brushes that have metal ferrules with painter’s tape to avoid scratches, and screen the intake of the vacuum with a fine mesh to prevent pieces of the object from getting trapped within the vacuum. Use wooden applicator sticks or plastic probes to dislodge adherent dirt such as the mud dauber nests and old polishing compound lodged within recesses.
2. Wipe away excessive grease with heavy-duty paper towels. Afterwards, use clean cloths (heavy-duty paper towels or chemical wipes) and cotton swabs dampened with an appropriate solvent such as odorless mineral spirits to wipe away remaining grease and any polishing compound residues.
3. Reduce excessive corrosion by probing with wooden or plastic applicator sticks. Use suction from a HEPA vacuum as noted above to contain loose corrosion products. Perform localized cleaning of corroded areas with solvent method, as described above.
4. Remove corrosion from metal medallions embedded within wheels and coat with wax or conservation approved lacquered. For the lead medallion, this treatment should be done sooner rather than later.
5. Remove the various labels, stickers, and tape remnants because the adhesives within these products often promote corrosion and etching of finishes. This may require using wooden applicator sticks or scalpels to remove the majority of the adhesive, followed by the
115 MARAD HERITAGE ASSETS CONSERVATION SURVEY AND REPORT
application of cotton swabs dampened with either warm water or an appropriate solvent to clean away remaining residues.
6. Monitor the condition of opening of joints and lifting veneer. This condition should remain stable if the wheels are kept in the acclimatized state in which they currently are within the secured storage room. However, an optimum climate-controlled environment of a) a cooler room temperature of 60°F, b) a relative humidity of 50%, c) good air ventilation, and d) low to no light is ideal and will help to prevent deterioration and further joint separation.
7. Important Note: Perform testing of all cleaning methods mentioned above prior to full-scale application to ensure surfaces are not adversely affected by the treatment.
