Start-up Task Order - TRACK

STATEMENT OF WORK

Track Geometry Characterization

1.0 Background

FRA previously conducted extensive research and published several reports that characterized the amplitudes and wavelength content of track geometry throughout the USA (see report links below). The data was used by researchers to study the response of vehicle to track geometry deviations. Based on this research different analytical geometry with various shapes and wavelength were defined.

This work was done in 1970’s and 1980’s, and does not reflect many of the operating conditions, track structures, and maintenance impacts that are present in the modern rail industry.

2.0 Objective

The objectives of this research is to research and analysis recently collected track geometry data from a variety of track locations and service conditions characterize the current state of track geometry in the US. The results of this research shall be used to better understand the quality level of modern track system, to support additional research on maintenance practices and vehicle track interaction, and to support FRA regulatory needs.

3.0 Scope of Work

The contractor shall provide the necessary personnel and equipment to complete the following work items:

DTFR53-17-R-00002 Attachment J-2

• Examine the FRA database of collected track geometry for all track classes

• Characterize the amplitude and wavelength content of the current track geometry environment for different classes of track, and compare these data to the older analyses.

• Define shape and wavelength for the anomalies present in the track data

• Characterize the amplitude and wavelength content of the current track geometry environment for different classes of track, and compare these data to the older analyses.

• Identify existence of combine geometry anomalies at one location

• Locate and compare data from past analyses with recently collected data.

• Produce a comprehensive report for publication

4.0 Deliverables

1. Monthly reporting as required by the base contract.

2. Research results, briefing packages, and other documents as required for communication and to support FRA objectives

3. A comprehensive research report, in FRA report format, for publication.

4. A technical briefing package highlighting the project execution, key findings, and suggested areas for further research

5. A technical briefing to FRA COR and staff at the conclusion of the research project.
