Start-up Task Order – ROLLING STOCK

STATEMENT OF WORK

Ground Truth Measurement of Track Geometry

1.0 Background

The accuracy of track geometry measurements made from a moving platform is often assessed by comparing selected measurements, for example gage and crosslevel, at given locations with static measurements made with a separate measurement tool, such as GEISMAR track gage and level bar, or by conducting reproducibility/repeatability analyses of track geometry measured by the measurement system at different speed and varying directions of travel.

Reproducibility assessments provide an estimate of random errors but usually do not provide for assessment of systematic repeatable errors. Track geometry measurements can be repeatable and reproducible but not necessarily accurate.

FRA has built a tangent test track section at the Transportation Technology Center (TTC) facility in Pueblo, CO, that has the capability to introduce known, controlled and adjustable geometry deviations into the track. FRA wants to use this track to test various track geometry measurement systems (TGMS) and verify their accuracy. Additionally, FRA is planning to build an adjustable precision curved test track section in near future.

The tangent section is built on a 500-ft concrete slab track with special rail fastener systems at 2-ft intervals. The coordinate of track center at each rail-tie connection is known very accurately. Accurate track geometry deviations can be introduced to the track through these adjustable rail-tie fasteners.

2.0 Objective

The objective of this research is to design and build a measurement device and implementation procedure that can be used to measure the actual track geometry installed on the concrete slabs very accurately and quickly to be used as the ground truth on the FRA’s precision test track.

3.0 Scope of Work

The contractor shall provide the necessary personnel and equipment to complete the following work items:

• Examine the test track to understand the requirements

• Design and build a system that can provide a measurement of track gage, right and left rail profile, and right and left alinement lateral deviations

DTFR53-17-R-00002 Attachment J-1

• Provide the required measurements at each rail-tie fastener (2-ft apart) along with the global position of the rail. In addition, intermediate measurements should be made in between ties at a frequency no more than every foot.

• Provide calculation of various geometry parameters for:

o Three chord length mid-chord offsets (MCO) at 31ft, 62ft, and 124ft based on FRA defined uniformity filters.;

o profile and alignment Space curves for each rail;

o gage, crosslevel, twist, warp,

• Develop a procedure for conducting the measurements using the device developed

• Demonstrate to FRA that the system that can give the curvature, superelevation and above track geometry parameters for the curved track section

• The system must be accurate to make the measurement to ±1/32 inch accuracy

• Demonstrate the system at TTC on the test track

• Deliver the system to FRA

• Produce a comprehensive report for publication

4.0 Deliverables

1. Monthly reporting as required by the base contract.

2. Research results, briefing packages, and other documents as required for communication and to support FRA objectives

3. Demonstrate the system operation and accuracy

4. A comprehensive research report, in FRA report format, for publication.

5. A technical briefing package highlighting the project execution, key findings, and suggested areas for further research

6. A technical briefing to FRA COR and staff at the conclusion of the research project.

7. Deliver Hardware and user manual
