Section 557 - Timber Structures for all other timber. The American
Wood Protection Association (AWPA) use category designation for rails, posts, and cross ties that are in ground contact is UC5A. Use
ACQ preservative for sand retention barrier timber, railings, and all electrical shed timber except shed piles. Treat all other timber with
CCA preservative. Acceptable preservative types and minimum preservative retention rates (lbs of preservative per cubic foot of timber) are:
Preservative Type UC5A Min. Retention
Alkaline Copper Quat (ACQ) 0.60
Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA) 2.50
Use waterborne preservatives.
All timber dimensions shown on the plans are nominal unless noted otherwise. Use standard dressed dimensions for sawn lumber as specified by the Southern Pine Inspection Bureau (SPIB) grading rules, latest edition.
Treat all cuts, abrasions or other disturbances to the surfaces of treated wood in accordance with Section 557 - Timber Structures.
Connectors:
Use galvanized steel for tie-back connections, tie rod connections, and hardware in contact with tie-backs and tie rod connections.
Use stainless connectors and hardware at all other locations.
Use threaded rod, thru bolts, or carriage bolts conforming to ASTM
A320, Grade B8, Class 2 for all bolt connections.
Use Ogee or dock washers, lock washers, and nuts on each end.
Use nuts conforming to the requirements of ASTM A194 Grade 8, Stainless AISI 304.
Use washers conforming to the requirements of SS304.
Do not use nails as a connector unless otherwise noted in these plans or Special Contract Requirements. Countersink all screws.
Tie Rods
Use deformed or plain round tie rods conforming to ASTM A615, Grade 60. Hot-dip galvanize tie rods in conformance with ASTM
A153 with a minimum thickness of 3.9 mils (0.1 millimeters).
Electrical:
See electrical sheets for electrical notes.
SCALE:
The scales shown on these plans are valid for printing on 11x17 paper.
ELEVATIONS:
Elevations indicated on these plans are based on NAVD 88.
GENERAL SCOPE OF WORK:
1. Remove the existing marina decking, install new bulkhead, install new timber posts, reinforce and supplement existing stringers, and replace existing decking. Replace sand retention barrier. Provide all new materials for the proposed marina rehabilitations unless otherwise noted.
2. Remove and reset all anchor cleats. Fasten cleats to underlying timber framing via lag screws through composite decking.
3. Replace electrical and lighting components as described on the electrical drawings in accordance with the National Electrical
Code at the locations shown.
4. Coordinate with all utilities that have facilities within the project area prior to the start of construction. Contact "Dig Safely" at
811 at least two full working days prior to any excavation or pile installation to determine the presence and/or location of any underground utilities.
5. Prepare, submit for approval, and properly implement a soil erosion plan in accordance with the requirements of Section 157
- Soil Erosion and Sediment Control.
6. Install fire extinguishers in accordance with NFPA 303, 6.2.1.1 at a maximum spacing of 150 feet O.C. along the marina, and no more than 75 feet from any boardwalk terminus. Mount 20 pound ABC fire extinguisher in a weatherproof housing to timber posts.
7. Salvage ladders to concessionaire.
GENERAL CONSTRUCTION NOTES:
1. The dimensions and elevations shown on these plans have been obtained from limited field investigations. Field measure all existing components impacted by the new work to ensure consistency with the proposed modifications. Bring any discrepancies in dimensions, character or extent of the existing components to the attention of the CO before advancing the work.
2. Develop the full capacity of the structural members in all connections in accordance with the latest edition of the National
Design Specification for Wood Construction and Supplement
(NDS). Design and detail all connections and framing not otherwise detailed on the plans. Submit details of any required connections and framing not otherwise detailed on the plans to the CO for review and approval prior to beginning any work.
3. Tighten thru-bolt connections so that washers just start to press into the wood substrate.
4. Repair damage to existing components or structures caused by contractor operations as directed by the CO.
5. Access the site by boat or barge. Obtain special use driving permits to access site when bay ice conditions prevent boat or barge access.
6. Set benchmark for electrical datum plane at El. 4.00 at location directed by CO.
7. Remove and reset existing timber lay piles as necessary to provide access for the construction of the Timber Bulkhead at no cost to the government. Prior to removal, identify to the CO the lay piles that require removal but that cannot be removed and reset in good condition. Provide 12-inch diameter, 25-foot long treated timber replacement piles for select lay piles where directed by the CO. Piles removed prior to CO approval and that cannot be reset will be considered to have been damaged by contractor operations and will not be paid for. Reset lay piles after completion of the bulkhead. Timber mooring piles required to be removed for contractor operations will not be paid for.
