Section 625. — TURF ESTABLISHMENT

Construction Requirements

625.03 General. Delete the first sentence and substitute the following:

Perform all seeding between March 1 and May 20.

625.08 Mulching

(b) Hydraulic Method Add the following:

Only clean wheat, barley, oat or rice straw should be utilized to prevent the spread of noxious weeds. Straw can be blown on or applied by hand to a uniform depth of approximately 2-inches or approximately 2 tons per acre. The straw must be anchored by an appropriate method immediately after application. Slopes steeper than 3:1 and areas adjacent to streams or drainages should be netted to prevent sliding of material and material entering the watercourse.

Apply wood fiber or grass straw cellulose fiber mulch.

Measurement

625.11 Delete the second sentence and substitute the following:

When measuring turf establishment and supplemental applications by the acre (hectare) or square yard (square meter), measure on the ground surface.

Section 626. — PLANTS, TREES, SHRUBS, VINES, AND

GROUNDCOVERS

Construction Requirements

626.03 General. Add the following:

Willow cuttings shall be harvested from 2-year old willows within 10 miles of the project area (“local”). Avoid current year’s suckers and current year’s growth. Live stakes shall be straight branches approximately the diameter of an adult’s thumb (1/2 to 1 inch) taken from healthy growing dormant living willows (plants that have lost their leaves for the winter). Appropriate willow sources occur along the banks of the Carson River within the project area and are primarily Narrowleaf willow (Salix exigua). Other willow species may occur within the project area, and may be used as approved by the CO. Obtain approval to harvest from the appropriate agencies or property owners prior to harvesting. Do not overharvest from one area.

626.05 Protection and Temporary Storage. Add the following:

Willow cuttings shall be kept moist, cool, and shaded at all times until installed. Cuttings shall be stored between 35 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit for no longer than one week. The butt or bottom end shall be submerged in water during storage for a minimum of 24 hours prior to planting.

The upper end shall never be submerged nor shall the cutting be stored horizontally in the water.

The bottom end shall be cut at a 45-degree angle and the top be cut at 90 degrees to branch to a 2-foot length. The diameter of the cuttings shall be ½ inch to 1 inch in diameter. All side branches shall be trimmed. Cuttings shall be harvested and planted during the dormant season.

The apical buds shall be cut off the top of the stakes as these buds release a hormone that discourages the development of lateral bud development.

626.07 Setting Plants. Add the following:

(d) Willow Cuttings. Prepare a pilot hole to the groundwater depth by hammering a rebar, dibble bar, or stinger into the soil. Place cutting gently into the hole, ensuring that the base is at or below the groundwater level. The cuttings shall protrude from the ground 4 to 6 inches. At least 2/3 of each cutting shall be inserted into the hole. The hole shall be backfilled with soil so that no voids remain around the stake. Watering during backfilling shall be done between backfill lifts to ensure all voids are filled. Tamp surface around cutting to secure in place.

Section 629. — ROLLED EROSION CONTROL PRODUCTS

AND CELLULAR CONFINEMENT SYSTEMS

Construction Requirements

629.05 (a) Slope Installations. Delete the text and substitute the following:

(a) Slope Installations. At the top of the slope, anchor the RECP by using an anchor trench.

(1) Anchor trench. Construct a 6- by 6-inch (150- by 150-millimeter) trench. Extend the upslope terminal end of the RECP 36 inches (900 millimeters) past the trench. Use staples on 12-inch (300-millimeter) centers to fasten the RECP into the trench. Backfill the trench and compact the soil. Secure the terminal end with a single row of staples on 12-inch (300-millimeter) centers and cover the end with soil. Apply turf establishment to trench.

Securely fasten all RECP to the soil by installing staples according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Section 633. — PERMANENT TRAFFIC CONTROL

Construction Requirements

633.05 Sign Panels. Add the following:

For all permanent sign panels, uniformly apply a 2-inch (50 millimeters) wide protective overlay film to the upper edge(s) of the sign and wrap over the front and back of the sign panel equally.

Apply the film using methods recommended by the manufacturer. Film must be manufactured expressly for use as a protective overlay film for outdoor traffic signs.

Film must be applied during manufacture of signs; field installation is not permitted.
