ENGINEERING
SITE SURVEY AND SCOPE OF WORK
LAX AE RTR Towers Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, CA April 2016 Prepared by Chris Truong Christine.truong@faa.gov | 310.386.9478 AJW-2W15F Operations and Infrastructure Engineering Services
Overview
In January and February of 2015, Parsons conducted structural engineering surveys of the LAX AE and BD RTR towers, respectively, for possible repair or replacement. Their reports recommended replacement of the LAX AE towers and repair of the LAX BD towers. Along with LAX SSC, I and David DeLangis of AJW-2W15F conducted verification surveys in April of 2016. What follows are our findings.
LAX AE
Overall structural damage to the towers was limited and no fatigue, buckling or major deformation was observed in steel members. Some cross members showed major corrosion.
Ladder access hatch frames on both towers also showed significant corrosion.

Recommended Scope of Work
Due to integrity of the existing structures, complete replacement as recommended by Parsons, “Demolition and replacement of existing two 20ft towers at LAX-AE along with new towers and concrete foundation,” is unnecessary. The following actions are recommended:
1. Sandblasting, stripping of towers, catwalk and all members in good structural condition with proper lead paint disposal.
2. Cold galvanizing and repainting of entire structure.
3. Replacement and reinforcement of deteriorated steel members and hatch frames.
4. Concrete repair and restoration.
5. Installation of reinforcing grade beams to existing lattice towers for seismic resistance.
