About this file

This is a Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) equipment specification document for the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) Materials Lab. IDOT is procuring a new DSR unit to support asphalt binder testing operations. The equipment must meet AASHTO standards T315, T316, T350, and T391, with specific technical requirements including US standard 110V 60Hz power, compact dimensions not exceeding 18" wide x 29" tall x 27" deep, precision air bearing technology, electronically commutated motor operation, and Peltier heating elements for temperature control. The DSR must include dual parallel plate measuring systems (25mm and 8mm) with quick-connect couplings, water-less sample chamber, automated temperature calibration software, user-editable test templates for asphalt binder protocols, and native iCCL testing capability. All necessary ancillary equipment including air dryers, hoses, cables, and portable thermometer must be provided to ensure complete functionality upon installation.

The procurement is structured as an Invitation for Bid (IFB) with an 8% Business Enterprise Program (BEP) goal for participation by disadvantaged business enterprises. No specific pricing terms, incumbent information, contract duration, or award dates are detailed in the specification document. Funding sources and total budget allocation are not specified in the available materials.

IL DOT Bituminous Chemistry Lab

Specification for Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) for the testing of Performance Graded Asphalt Binder

The DSR shall conform to the following:

-Power requirements shall be US standard 110 V 60 Hz.

-Shall have a compact size of no more than approximately 18” wide x 29” tall x 27” deep to allow for integration with other lab instrumentation.

-Shall meet or exceed all requirements for AASHTO T315, T316, T350, and T391.

-Shall use a precision air bearing to allow for frictionless support for the moving parts of the measuring systems.

-Shall use an electronically commutated motor for frictionless, synchronous movement of the rotor enabling ultra precise movements to ensure accurate results.

-Shall use Peltier heating elements above and below the sample for ultra precise temperature control; heat exchange of heating elements shall not require water circulation.

-Shall include a water-less sample chamber (hood) to ensure a completely dry testing environment.

-Shall include the proper parallel plate measuring systems (25 mm & 8 mm) used for asphalt binder testing. Measuring systems shall have a quick connect coupling to allow for one handed connections and quick changes between tests. Measuring systems shall be automatically detected and recognized by the DSR for easy test configuration.

-Shall include software with specific test templates for asphalt binder testing protocols.

These templates shall be user-editable to allow for test customization. Test reports generated by the software shall be customizable by user. Shall be capable of running iCCL testing natively.

-Shall have a fully automated temperature calibration and verification program built into the software.

-Shall come with all necessary equipment (i.e. air dryers, hoses, cables, portable thermometer, etc.) to make the DSR completely functional after install.
