3-4 Minimum Load Standards

The current standard magazine design at the Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan (KAB) sites is based on the standard design, 421-80-07, which has already been validated and approved by the Department of Defense Explosives Safety Board (DDESB) to provide a 7-bar blast rating in accordance with explosive safety criteria. The existing standard design is drawn in U.S. Customary (USC) units and standard U.S. steel shapes and material properties (ASTM, etc.). Since the ECM’s doors will be constructed in Japan using local labor, the use of metric (SI) units is required with local materials and steel shapes in order to minimize construction costs. For 7-bar ECM with 500,000 lbs. (2,224 kN) net explosive weight of HD 1.1 material, the triangular pulse blast load are:

·DOOR...102 psi (700kPa)...21.74 ms duration...13.9 W1/3 psi-ms (123 Q1/3) impulse

This calculation set provides calculations supporting the metric conversion of blast-related elements from English to metric units. Those elements that require blast resistance and which are evaluated include:

· Blast Doors

· Headed studs supporting the blast door frame

It shall be noted that all other elements, such as side/rear walls, foundations, wing walls do not require blast resistance and therefore are not addressed herein.
