About this file

This is a specification document for a Medium Voltage (MV) Powerhouse, a factory-built, single-piece NEMA 3R rated enclosure designed to house MV and LV electrical distribution equipment at NASA's Stennis Space Center facility in Mississippi.

The MV Powerhouse shall be a pre-assembled unit with nominal dimensions of 38 feet length, 15 feet width, and 10 feet 6 inches ceiling height, constructed of interlocking pre-galvanized steel panels on a structural steel grid base engineered for lifting and transport. The enclosure must withstand environmental loads including 20 psf roof and snow loads, 130 mph winds (Exposure C), and Seismic Category C conditions, with insulation values of R-13 (walls), R-19 (roof), and R-12 (floor). The HVAC system consists of two Bard 4-ton wall-mounted units operating at 480V, 3-phase, maintaining interior temperatures between 65°F and 80°F with exterior design range of 0°F to 100°F, featuring lead-lag controller with comprehensive alarm capabilities and Modbus TCP/IP communication.

Structural construction includes W16x26 and C10x15.3 steel members with six SL-30FL lift lugs, 1/4-inch steel plate flooring with 4-inch fire-resistant spray polyurethane foam insulation, and 16-gauge G90 galvanized interlocking panels. Electrical systems include fourteen 4-ft LED interior fixtures, two exterior LED wallpacks with photocells, emergency lighting, a 45 kVA transformer (480V–208Y/120V), 480/277V 600A AC panelboard, 125VDC distribution panel, DC PowerCab system with 100 AH battery string, 5 kV EPR/PVC shielded cables (#350 MCM), and cable tray systems. A full perimeter copper grounding bar loop (2 in × 1/4 in) with stainless steel ground pads and #4/0 lugs provides grounding. Customer-supplied equipment including 5 kV switchgear, MCCs, and breaker lift truck shall be installed by the contractor. Documentation deliverables include PE-sealed structural calculations, HVAC calculations, center-of-gravity documentation, foundation load charts, UL compliance certification, and electronic drawing sets for structural and electrical systems. The powerhouse weighs approximately 66,301 pounds total and ships at dimensions of 38 ft 6 in L × 15 ft 6 in W × 13 ft 2.5 in H, with HVAC units, canopies, and select accessories potentially shipping loose.
