About this file
This document is a Draft Statement of Work (SOW) for the Argon Condensers Systems 1 and 2 for the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) / Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) project.
The SOW defines the scope of work for engineering, manufacturing, testing, and delivering the argon condensers systems that will support the cryostats for the neutrino detectors located at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota. The systems will condense gaseous argon boil-off and transfer the recondensed liquid argon to the purification system and back to the cryostats. Key components include argon condensers, phase separators, interconnecting piping, valves, and instrumentation. The anticipated solicitation will be issued in February 2025 with an 8-week response period, and the subcontract award is planned for November 2025. The final delivery to the LBNF warehouse in Rapid City, South Dakota is required no later than April 2027. The installation will be performed by Fermi Research Alliance LLC under a separate subcontract, with the possibility for the selected vendor to assist during installation.

1 Scope of the Document
This document defines the Scope of Work for the Argon Condensers System 1 and 2 for the Long-Baseline
Neutrino Facility (LBNF) [1].
2 Introduction
LBNF (http:/lbnf-dune.fnal.gov/) will provide the infrastructure necessary to support the massive neutrino detectors located deep underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, SD.
The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) will employ four (4) such detectors, housed in cryostats requiring almost 70,000 tons of liquid argon (LAr), about 17,500 tons for each cryostat. DUNE
(http://www.dunescience.org/) is expected to achieve transformative discoveries, making definitive determinations of neutrino properties, examining the dynamics of supernovae that produced the heavy elements necessary for life, and probing the possibility of proton decay.
3 Scope of Work
The scope includes the engineering, manufacturing, testing and delivery of the Argon Condensers Systems supporting cryostats 1 and 2. Delivery is to the LBNF warehouse facility in Rapid City, South Dakota, USA.
The installation is performed by FRA under a different Subcontract with the possibility to assist during installation and/or to perform the installation as well. Appendix A shows the Process Flow Diagram of the cryogenic installation. Argon Condensers Systems 1 and 2 are items #12 and #13. Appendix B includes a preliminary list of the scope supplied by FRA.
3.1 General Description
Each Argon Condensers System consists of cryogenic vacuum insulated vessels, pipes and valves, and instrumentation to recondense the gaseous Argon (GAr) boil off from the cryostat, send the recondensed
LAr to the purification system and return the purified LAr from the purification system back to the cryostat.
An important feature of each system is the desuperheater, which removes heat from the boiloff GAr before it enters the condensers (see Table 3-1 also). There are two systems, one serving the Vertical Drift detector in the cryostat located in the South Cavern (VD) and one serving the Horizontal Drift detector located in the cryostat in the North Cavern (HD). Each cryostat has its own Argon Condenser System, and they are functionally identical. The layout of the equipment that serves the cryostat in the North Cavern is symmetrical to that in the South Cavern with respect to the Central Utility Cavern (CUC).

3.2 Modes of Operation
The Supply shall condense gaseous argon via liquid nitrogen evaporation and transfer liquid argon from the purification system to the cryostat and from the condenser to the purification system. To these ends, the Supply shall operate under the modes described in Table 3-1.
Table 3-1 Argon Condensers Systems modes of operation
Mode Name Description
Cryostat
Cooldown1 / Fill
GAr enters the underground space via the Ross Shaft piping and makes its way to the CUC. The GAr at the CUC entrance transfers to the GAr purification filters, and then directs purified GAr to the Supply. The Supply recondenses the Argon via nitrogen fueled condensing and sends it to the cryostat for cooling/filling.
GAr Recovery and Recondensation
Due to small heat ingress, LAr will boil off into a vapor gas within the cryostat. This GAr will be removed from the top of the cryostat through cryogenic feedthroughs and vent line to the Condensers. The exiting GAr is directed to the heat exchanger within the Condenser (part of Supply). It is then cooled against a stream of LN2 and condensed back into a liquid.
Argon Phase Separators
Purified LAr from the CUC goes back to a Detector Cavern where it passes through LAr Phase Separators (part of Supply) and is then used to cool down and fill the cryostats. GAr from Phase Separators sent to the Condensers.
4 Desuperheater Pre-cool GAr with LAr before the GAr is sent to the Condenser.
Nitrogen Phase
Separators
LN2 from the refrigeration system within the CUC is withdrawn from the storage tanks and supplied via a transfer line to the Nitrogen Phase Separator (part of Supply). LN2 is withdrawn from the bottom of the Nitrogen Phase Separator and directed to the Argon Condenser.
1 Cooldown – only for the cryostat located in the North Cavern
3.3 Components of the System
The list of vessels for one system includes:
- Argon condensers (6 units, each one with 50 kW of duty).
- Argon phase separators (4 units).
- Nitrogen phase separators (6 units, matching the Argon condensers).
- Circulation valve boxes (6 units, matching the Argon condensers, pumps are supplied by FRA).
- Other valve boxes as logistics allows it.
Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) / Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) - US 3-2
Additional components include:
- Interconnecting piping, valves and instrumentation connecting the Argon condensers to the
Nitrogen phase separators on the Nitrogen side and the Argon condensers to the GAr boil-off line from the cryostat and the circulation valve boxes on the Argon side.
- Interconnecting piping, valves and instrumentation connecting the Argon phase separators to the
LAr pipe coming from the purification system and the LAr delivery pipes to the cryostat. There is also a GAr line going back to the Argon condensers.
Figures 3-1 to 3-3 show a concept with not-to-exceed envelopes of the Argon Condensers System serving the cryostat in the North Cavern. Figures 3-4 to 3-6 show conceptual not-to-exceed envelops of each vessel. Figures 3-7 and 3-8 show additional details of each Argon condenser.

4 Estimated Schedule
A tentative schedule for the Argon Condensers Systems 1 and 2 engineering, manufacturing and installation is shown in Figure 4-1. It assumes the procurement is made from Fermilab using realistic durations for the DOE review process and leveraging the existing IDIQ for the Argon Distribution
Equipment. The final milestone is the delivery of the systems at SURF in April 2027. The systems are then installed by FRA under a separate Subcontract with the possibility to assist during installation and/or to perform the installation as well.
