1.0 Background

Both Product Manager (PdM) Fire Support Systems (FSS) and PdM Organic Precision Fires (OPF) are within Marine Corps System Command’s (MCSC) Ground Weapon Systems (GWS) Program Manager, which equips the United States Marine Corps (USMC) with indirect-fire weapon systems, targeting systems, fire control, radars, acoustic sensors, and artillery survey equipment. PdM FSS is currently divided into four (4) teams: Artillery & Supporting Equipment (A&SE), Fire Direction & Naval Fires Command and Control (FD&NFC2), Fire Support Coordination (FSC), and M777A2. PdM OPF consists of OPF-Light (OPF-L) and OPF-Medium

(OPF-M).

1.1 A&SE

The A&SE team supports the development, procurement and sustainment of survey and meteorological capabilities by resourcing current and future fires support and target acquisition capabilities. The A&SE consists of two (2) teams, the Fire Support Modification Line (FSML) and the Family of Target Acquisition Systems (FTAS).

1.1.1 The FSML team supports the development, procurement, and sustainment of the fires support capabilities which consist of eight (8) distinct end items that encompass the equipment required to support survey and meteorological requirements for accurate predicted fires within the field artillery regiment. These end items include the Location Azimuth Determining System (LADS) which is replacing the Improved Position Azimuth Determining System – Global Positioning Satellite, LADS Maintainer Kit, Marine Artillery Survey Set, Modeled Meteorological Information Manager, Global Positioning System-Survey, Pilot Balloon, Aiming Circle, and the Sensor Computer. FSML provides the Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF) with the capability to provide accurate ballistic indirect fires and counterfires. FSML is critical for providing accurate indirect artillery fire in support of maneuver elements to satisfy the suppression mission essential task.

1.1.2 The FTAS team supports development, procurement and sustainment of target acquisition capabilities. FTAS encompasses the equipment required to support target acquisition within the target acquisition platoon and is resident in the headquarters battery of each artillery regiment.

FTAS provides the MAGTF with the capability to locate, identify and attack enemy indirect fire weapons systems, observe and direct friendly artillery fire. FTAS consists of the AN/TPQ-46B Firefinder Radar currently in disposal, the AN/TPQ-54(V)1 Lightweight Counter Mortar Radar Mobile (LCMR), and the Ground Counter Fire Sensor. FTAS is critical in the execution of counterfire and integration of target acquisition information. FTAS also provides artillery firing units with the ability to conduct artillery registration and other friendly fire missions.

1.2 FD&NFC2

The FD&NFC2 team manages two (2) distinct but inter-related projects, the Mobile Command Vehicle (MCV), a hardware (HW) intensive effort, and the Advanced Field Artillery Tactical Data System (AFATDS), which is a software (SW) intensive effort. The Integrated Product Team (IPT) also integrates with a variety of stakeholders for Fires Command and Control (C2) modernization.

1.2.1 The MCV is an integration effort aimed at combining a proven shelter (S-788), Program of Record (PoR) HW Environmental Control Unit (ECU), Radio Equipment, Fires C2 systems), and a Joint Light Tactical Vehicle – Utility (JLTV) to provide USMC Fire Support units with a mounted Fires C2 capability. The MCV operational employment will be similar to legacy shelters, thereby eliminating the need for modifications to unit Tables of Organization (T/O), additional personnel allocation, or the creation of a new Military Occupation Specialty.

Additionally, Medium Missile Batteries will utilize the MCV as a mobile Fires C2 platform to meet the Navy-Marine Corps Expeditionary Ship Interdiction System's (NMESIS) Section Fires C2 requirements.

1.2.2 The AFATDS is a Fires C2 SW platform developed by the United States (U.S.) Army Program Executive Office Command, Control, Communications and Networks, which is the primary automated fire support C2 system currently fielded by the U.S. Army, USMC, and coalition partners. The SW, fielded by the USMC on a dedicated laptop, integrates all supporting arms assets within the MAGTF to include artillery, rockets and missiles, naval gunfire, fixed and rotary wing aviation, mortars, and any emerging capabilities such as NMESIS.

It can be used in a standalone configuration or installed on various mobile fire support platforms, including the MCV.
