About this file

This document is a draft Commercial Item Description (CID) for a nursing undershirt intended for postpartum nursing female military personnel. The draft specification, prepared by the United States Marine Corps, covers a nursing undershirt available in eight color classes (including OD Green, Tan, Blue, White, Black, Gray, and Coyote) and six sizes ranging from X-Small to XX-Large. The undershirt must be made from a synthetic and cotton blend material not exceeding 50 percent synthetic, with specific requirements for weight, bursting strength, dimensional stability, colorfastness, and other technical characteristics.

The document invites industry feedback on the draft specification, with comments to be submitted to USMC_STDZ@usmc.mil by July 30, 2025. The nursing undershirt will feature a crew neck style with a 1-inch wide double thickness rib neck trim, a front crop style with underlay, and an optional "ARMY" gold lettering for Class 5 shirts. The specification includes detailed measurement guidelines, labeling requirements, and quality assurance provisions. The final document will be published on ASSIST Online after the review period, with the goal of promoting competition and obtaining manufacturability input from potential vendors.

1.50±0.01-gram samples from each material submitted for evaluation shall be tested. Each of the two samples shall be cut into very small pieces and placed into separate test tubes. The samples shall be submersed in a stannous chloride solution that contains 100 grams of American Chemical Society (ACS) grade stannous chloride crystals in

100 milliliters of ACS grade hydrochloric acid (35 percent concentration) and 50 milliliters of distilled water. A filter paper wet out with a 5.0 percent lead acetate solution shall be placed over the top of the test tube. The lead acetate solution shall contain 5.0 grams of chemically pure (CP) reagent grade lead acetate and enough distilled water to make up a 100-milliliter solution; if the solution is not clear, a few drops (one at a time) of glacial acetic acid shall be added until the solution is clear. The test tube containing the textile sample, stannous chloride, and wet filter paper shall be heated over a low flame until the solution is boiling. The solution should not be heated for more than 15 seconds. A brown to black stain on the filter paper should be evaluated as follows:

a. Free – the filter paper shows no discoloration or staining of any kind.

b. Slight – the filter paper shows a light tan to light brown discoloration stain.

c. Moderate – the filter paper shows a dark brown discoloration stain.

d. Severe – the filter paper shows a black discoloration stain.

The rating shall be recorded. The results shall be recorded as “pass” or “fail”.

3.3.4 Thread. Thread for all seaming and stitching shall be in accordance with standard commercial practice. The color of the thread shall be a good match to the basic material and shall meet the colorfastness requirements specified for the basic material. The finished thread shall have no chemical finishes or treatments, other than those commonly used on commercial threads.

3.4 Lettering.

3.4.1 ARMY. When specified in the contract or order (see 7.3), the front of the undershirt shall have the word

“ARMY” in gold lettering (see figure 4). The top of the lettering shall be positioned 2 (±1/4) inches below the center front neckband joining seam. The lettering shall be centered horizontally on the front of the undershirt. The color of the lettering shall be a close match to Army Gold 558. The finished printed text shall match the provided design for size and finished appearance (see 7.3). Text design file may be obtained from the contracting activity.

The lettering shall be applied by heat transfer method or printing and shall not delaminate, crack, peel, or change shade when tested as specified in 3.8. The size of the finished lettering is dependent upon the size of the shirt, as follows:

For sizes X-Small and Small

Letter Height 2-3/4 (±1/4) inches

7.4 Visual shade matching. In 2017, option A of AATCC EP9, Visual Assessment of Color Difference of Textiles, was changed to option C. NOTE: In case of confusion, the viewing geometry should be “The specimen plane and illumination source will be parallel to each other and aligned so that the light flux is incident at the center of the specimen plane, which is set at a 35±5-degree angle relative to the horizontal. The observer will view the specimens at a 90-degree angle, relative to the plane of the specimens.”

7.4.1 Use of D75 illuminant. In 2022, the U.S. Military (all services) accepted D65 as the new preferred light source for visual shade matching due to supply chain issues with D75.
