About this file

This is a specifications document from the Frank Graeber License Plate Factory in Canon City, Colorado, detailing aluminum requirements for regular license plate production. The document outlines comprehensive technical specifications for aluminum coil materials, including alloy type 3105H21 at 21 gauge thickness (.027 inches) with coil widths between 11.98 and 12.00 inches. The aluminum must meet specific strength requirements with ultimate strength between 17,500 to 20,500 PSI and minimum yield strength of 13,000 to 18,000 PSI, with elongation on standard specimens of minimum 16 percent (20 percent nominal). The material must withstand embossing with steel dies to a height of .09375 inches without breaking, cutting, surface tearing, or plate warping, and must maintain a conversion coating in conformance with ASTM specification B-449-Class 2 with coating weight of 35 milligrams per square foot and a median of 25 milligrams per square foot as optimal.

Packaging specifications require coils with 20-inch diameter cores and outside diameters not exceeding 45 inches, with individual coil weights capped at 1,500 pounds. Coils must be securely banded around the circumference and through the inside core to prevent telescoping, laid on their side, banded in pairs, and separated by 2-by-2 inch wood spacers. All materials must be packaged to prevent moisture and foreign material exposure during transit, with coils free from edge damage caused by cables, forklifts, or cutting dies. Aluminum must be coiled straight and reasonably tight with no more than 1/16-inch interweave, and all coils must unwind clockwise when placed on pallets.
