About this file

This is a specifications document issued by the Frank Graeber License Plate Factory in Canon City, Colorado, for coiled aluminum used in motorcycle license plate manufacturing. The specifications detail the aluminum alloy requirements, physical dimensions, structural properties, and packaging standards necessary for the production of license plates. The aluminum must be 3105 H21 alloy, 21 gauge (.27" thickness), with a coil width of 7.094 to 7.074 inches. The material must possess an ultimate strength of 17,500 to 20,500 PSI and a minimum yield strength of 13,000 to 18,000 PSI, with elongation of at least 16 percent on standard specimens. The aluminum must withstand embossing with steel dies to a height of .09375 inches without breaking, cutting, surface tearing, or warping.

The surface finish must comply with ASTM specification B-449-Class 2 with a conversion coating free from powdery residue, oil, or other substances affecting reflective sheeting adhesion, with coating weight between 25 and 35 milligrams per square foot. Coils must have 20-inch diameter cores with outside diameters not exceeding 50 inches and weights not exceeding 700 pounds, securely banded and separated by 2x2-inch wood spacers to prevent telescoping. The aluminum must be coiled straight and tight with no more than 1/16-inch interweave, must be free from edge damage, and must unwind clockwise. All coils must be packaged to prevent moisture and foreign material exposure during transit.

B-449-Class 2 (or as revised) ; free from any powdery residue, oil, or other substance which might affect adhesion of reflective sheeting; coating weight to

35mg./sq.ft., with a median of 25 mg./sq.ft. As the optimum.

Packaging; coils to have 20" diameter cores, with outside coil diameter not to exceed 50", coil weight not to exceed 700 lbs; each coil securely banded around the circumference and through the inside core to prevent telescoping, coils laid on their side and banded in pairs and separated by 2"x2" wood spacers;

packaged to prevent exposure to moisture and foreign material while in transit

Coils shall be free from edge damage such as is caused by cables, forklifts, dull cutting dies, rough separator disc, and/or other causes that result in rough, wavy or damaged edges.
