About this file

This is a Questions and Responses document for a Fiber Optic Cable Installation project issued by MCC (Metropolitan Community College) on February 9, 2017. The project encompasses fiber optic cable installation with associated materials and equipment, including duplex fiber jumpers, plenum-rated cables for indoor and outdoor use, innerduct, and data room networking equipment. A site walk was scheduled for February 1st to allow bidders to assess the installation locations, which include connections between the Main Distribution Frame (MDF) and multiple campus buildings: Cedar Hall, Elm Hall, Birch Hall, Aspen Hall, and Spruce Hall. The project requires bidders to provide warranty information for quality materials, though manufacturers are not specified and bidders may propose their choice of suppliers.

The project is funded through MCC funds rather than federal sources. All fiber cables, including outdoor cables running to various halls, must be plenum-rated to comply with fire code requirements, as these cables will pass through plenum spaces at some point in their installation. An optional 1-inch plenum innerduct is required between the MDF and conduit running to Cedar and Elm Hall, and may be optional if the outside cable is plenum-rated. Work may be performed during regular business hours from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Regarding optional Cisco networking equipment, MCC specified that the WS-X6716-10G-3C-RF module is required for compatibility with their 6509-e switch supervisor module, and a 6RU rack mount panel is acceptable as a substitute for the specified 4RU panel in the main data room. Quoting optional Cisco switches is not mandatory for bid consideration.

DQ201700857- Fiber Optic Cable--Questions/Responses Post date: 2/9/17

1. Is the project funded by Federal Funds?

Response: No, it will be funded by MCC funds

2. For the Fiber Optic Cable Installation project that we will walk on February 1st, is there a specific manufacturer of materials that the contractor must use or is it an open bid using the contractor's choice of manufacturer?

Response: MCC is not specifying the manufacturer. However, we are requesting warranty information and do want quality materials.

3. Can work be performed during regular business hours (7:00am to 5:00pm)?

Response: Yes

4. Are the required fiber jumpers to be simplex or duplex?

Response: Duplex

5. Pricing for 1” plenum innerduct is being requested. Where is this to be used? Is it optional?

Response: This would be used between the MDF and the conduit running to Cedar and Elm Hall.

If the outside cable that is going in the conduit is plenum rated then it could be optional.

6. Are all fiber cables to be plenum rated (indoor and outdoor)? It appears that Aspen Hall and Spruce Hall have a plenum drop ceiling requiring that any cables that use that space be plenum rated to comply with fire codes. This will include the outdoor cables going to Elm, Cedar, and Birch Halls?

Response: Yes the cables should be plenum rated as all cables, even the ones going to Elm, Cedar and Birch will be in a plenum at one point.

7. For the optional switches, part #WS-X6716-10GE is at end of life. We are recommending the C6800-16P10G. Is this an acceptable substitute?

Response: No. This would not be acceptable as it is not compatible with my 6509-e switch supervisor module according to our Cisco rep. The WS-X6716-10G-3C-RF is what MCC needs to work with our system.

8. Would a 6ru rack mount panel be acceptable in the main data room? You currently call for a 4ru rack mount panel.

Response: MCC would accept a 6ru panel in the main data room.

9. Do we have to quote the optional material Cisco switches to be considered for award?

Response: No
