About this file
This is a snow and ice removal brochure from the City of New Haven Department of Public Works (DPW) in Connecticut, describing municipal winter maintenance operations and local ordinances. The City of New Haven DPW maintains 234 miles of roadway and utilizes both its internal fleet and local contractor services to perform snowplowing, snow removal, and ice treatment during winter storms. During a typical Connecticut winter, the department uses approximately 2,000 tons of sand and salt to maintain safe road conditions for drivers and pedestrians. While the majority of snow removal work is performed by city staff, the brochure indicates that the DPW supplements its operations with services from local contractors to complement the town's equipment and personnel capabilities.
The brochure outlines New Haven City Ordinances establishing snow and ice removal responsibilities and penalties for non-compliance. Property owners abutting sidewalks must remove snow, sleet, or ice within 42 inches of their property within 24 hours after a storm ends, or apply an abrasive substance to maintain safe conditions, with violations subject to fines of $100 or maximum state statute amounts per day of violation. Property owners must also maintain gutters and catch basin tops free of snow and ice to permit water passage. The ordinance prohibits throwing or plowing snow into streets with similar penalty provisions. The City DPW and Parks Department assist with crosswalks and handicapped ramps, while vacant city lots are maintained by the Livable Cities Initiative. State roadways within New Haven are the responsibility of the Connecticut Department of Transportation.
