About this file

This is a snow and ice brochure and public information document issued by the City of New Haven Department of Public Works in Connecticut. The document outlines the city's snow removal operations and responsibilities, indicating that while the Department of Public Works performs the majority of snowplowing and removal work, local contractors are also utilized to supplement the city's fleet. The City of New Haven maintains 234 miles of roadway and typically uses approximately 2,000 tons of sand and salt annually during Connecticut winters. The brochure details municipal snow removal services provided to roads, crosswalks, and handicap ramps, with the Connecticut Department of Transportation responsible for state roadways within the city limits. The document specifies that vacant city lots are managed under the Livable Cities Initiative through the Department of Public Works and Parks Department.

The brochure includes municipal ordinances establishing property owner responsibilities for snow and ice removal, requiring removal or abatement of snow, sleet, and ice within 42 inches of properties within 24 hours after storms conclude, with penalties of $100 per day for violations. Additional ordinances prohibit throwing or plowing snow into streets and require property owners to maintain gutters and catch basin tops free of snow and ice to permit water passage, with similar daily fines for non-compliance. The document provides contact information for the Department of Public Works, including the Director Michael Siciliano and the city's general website, but contains no specific pricing information, contract terms, response deadlines, or award details related to contractor solicitations.
