About this file
This Detailed Order Specifications Sheet (DOSS) describes a wildlife tree and down wood creation project for the McKenzie River Ranger District. The document specifies three tree treatment methods for Douglas-fir, Western Hemlock, Grand Fir, and True Fir species: chainsaw topping, high girdling, and base girdling. Trees must be 14-24 inches in diameter, at least 50 feet tall, and treated at specific heights, with Douglas-fir being the preferred species. Contractors are required to select trees avoiding damaged areas, roads, and riparian reserves, and must distribute treatments in 2-4 tree clumps across 2-acre sections.
The contractor must record detailed information for each treated tree, including UTM coordinates, size, unit, and species, submitting both paper and electronic copies to the government. The government will provide pre-numbered metal tags, wildlife signs, and bright-colored flasher cards to be placed on each treated tree. Specific treatment guidelines include noting remaining limbs, treatment heights, and placement of tags and markers. The goal appears to be creating wildlife habitat by strategically modifying selected trees in a forest management context.
