About this file
This is a Statement of Work (SOW) from Argonne National Laboratory for the purchase of a dilution refrigerator system, dated September 29, 2026.
Argonne National Laboratory seeks to procure a closed-loop continuous cooling dilution refrigerator system capable of achieving base temperatures below 10 mK within 24 hours of cooldown initiation. The system must deliver specified cooling powers at multiple temperature stages: greater than 14 µW at 20 mK and greater than 450 µW at 100 mK at the mixing chamber stage, greater than 36 W at 45 K for the first pulse tube stage, and greater than 1.35 W at 4.2 K for the second pulse tube stage. Technical requirements include a standard plate configuration with an added mixing chamber plate exceeding 280 mm diameter, 5 KF40 and 2 KF63 line-of-sight ports, factory-installed and tested twisted pair DC and coaxial RF wiring supporting signals up to 18 GHz and 40 GHz, factory-installed cryogenic circulators, isolators, and HEMT amplifiers, integration of a 0.25-0.25-0.25 Tesla vector magnet with persistent switches and 130 mm bore size, and a fully oil-free gas handling system. The supplier must be a direct manufacturer providing timely remote and in-person technical support, including on-site warranty support for critical cryogenic components.
Acceptance verification requires supplier provision of full design drawings accepted by ANL in writing, visual inspection and cross-checking of shipped items upon receipt, RF line performance testing documentation from the supplier's factory, and multiple on-site performance evaluations including outer vacuum can leak checks reaching less than 1×10⁻³ mbar, DC cryostat ground resistance exceeding 1 megohm, base temperature achievement below 10 mK with magnet and wiring installed, cooling power verification at 100 mK, and confirmation that all three magnet axes operate without significant magnet heating. Written ANL acceptance is required at each verification stage.

Argonne National Laboratory Statement of Work
Dilution Refrigerator 9/29/2026
Argonne National Laboratory is seeking to purchase a dilution refrigerator system with the following technical specifications:
1. Closed loop continuous cooling via a He3-He4 dilution process that can achieve and maintain a base temperature of <10 mK of the mixing chamber plate within <24 hours of beginning the cooldown.
2. Cooling powers of >14 uW at 20 mK and >450 uW at 100 mK at the mixing chamber stage, >36W at 45K for the first pulse tube stage, and >1.35W at 4.2K for the second pulse tube stage.
3. Standard plate configuration with an added mixing chamber plate (>280mm diameter) and corresponding modified shielding extensions.
4. 5x KF40 and 2x KF63 line-of-sight (LOS) ports for pre-installed wiring and forward compatibility with custom add-ons.
5. Factory installation and testing of twisted pair DC and coaxial RF wiring with optimized attenuation and materials selection at and between various stages. RF wiring to include both SMA and K-connectors for support of signals up to 18 GHz and 40 GHz, respectively.
6. Factory installation and testing of cryogenic circulators, and isolators, and HEMT amplifiers.
7. Integration of 0.25-0.25-0.25 Tesla vector magnet with persistent switches and a 130 mm bore size.
8. The Gas Handling System is operated with fully oil-free pumps and compressors.
We also require the following from the supplier:
1. The system must be provided by a direct manufacturer.
2. Manufacturer must provide timely remote and in-person technical support to debug and resolve issues, including both software and hardware. On-site support under warranty for critical cryogenic components.
Acceptance Criteria The dilution refrigerator system is to be verified with the following performance checks:
1. Full design drawings with customization provided by the supplier, accepted by ANL in writing.
2. When the system is received from supplier:
a. Visual inspection of the crates (i.e. Tip-N-Tells) and cross-check shipped items.
b. RF line performance (tested at supplier factory) provided.
c. Acceptance by ANL in writing.
3. On-site system performance evaluation after installation including the following:
a. Leak check of outer vacuum can (can reach <1e-3 mbar before cooldown begins).
b. DC resistance of the cryostat to ground > 1M Ohm.
c. Base temperature <10mK with vector magnet and DC/RF lines installed.
d. Verify cooling power to be >450 µW at 100mK.
e. Verify that all three magnet axes are operable without significant heating of the magnet temperature.
f. Acceptance by ANL in writing.
