About this file
This document is a drawing update request letter from Messinger Bearings to the FAA Aeronautical Center dated February 18, 2025, addressing technical issues with drawing #DE-C-2877-B for a bearing manufacturing contract. The letter highlights two primary concerns: a dimensional tolerance conflict and an incorrect revision block. Specifically, Messinger Bearings explains that the current drawing tolerances create a manufacturing challenge, making it impossible to simultaneously satisfy both .688 -.010+.000 and 1.372 -.010+.000 dimensional requirements due to tolerance stack-up problems.
The company proposes two potential solutions to resolve the tolerance issue: either reversing the tolerance to 1.372 -.000+.010 or changing the dimension to 1.382 -.010+.000. Additionally, they note that the drawing's revision block incorrectly shows REV LTR. "A" when it should reflect the current revision level following a revision on 5/30/24. The letter requests prompt action on updating the drawing to support ongoing production, and is addressed to Georgia Williams at the FAA Aeronautical Center in Oklahoma City, referencing a specific contract for manufacturing bearings to the specified drawing.

Georgia, Messinger Bearings is currently in the process of manufacturing bearings to drawing #DE-C-2877-B under the above referenced contract. We are requesting the FAA to update their drawing [attached and marked] to correct the following:
DIMENSIONAL TOLERANCE
It is not possible to satisfy both the .688 -.010
+.000 and 1.372 -.010 +.000 dimensions/tolerances due to a stack up tolerance conflict. The tolerance of the latter must be restricted to 1.372 -.002 +.000 when manufacturing is in-process to avoid tolerance stack up at assembly, which can result in the .688 -.010 +.000 feature being over its high limit. Taking into consideration the effect of the slight misalignment of ball paths between both races at assembly, the tolerance must further be restricted to 1.372 -.001
+.000 for manufacturing practicality, thus leading to increased manufacturing costs. This appears to be an error going back to the original creation of the DE-C-2877 drawing. To correct this, the tolerance can either be reversed [ 1.372 -.000
+.010 ] or, if the preference is to keep the tolerance in the same direction, the dimension can be changed to 1.382 -.010
+.000.
Either way provides the same outcome.
REVISION BLOCK
The current drawing [DE-C-2877-B] contains REV LTR. “A” when the drawing was revised from revision “A” to revision “B” on 5/30/24. REV LTR. “A” should be corrected to the current revision level.
We are requesting:
Drawing DE-C-28877 be updated to correct the stack up tolerance conflict and revision block as noted above. Your prompt action on this drawing update request is appreciated as it supports production.
Sincerely,
