2 feet in height need to be cut. The desired average spacing of leave trees is 12 feet by 12 feet, provided that trees 6.0 inches in diameter and larger be used for spacing purposes.
C. Where there are considerable variations in the stands’ spacing, thinning shall be done to a minimum of 10 feet by 10 feet spacing and a maximum of 15 feet by 15 feet spacing between tree crowns to accommodate the selection of the best possible crop trees to leave.
In areas that are predominantly meadows that contain conifer encroachment within the unit boundaries shall be masticated to the predominant timber edge.
D. Trees indicative of good quality in the 0.1 to 5.9 inch DBH class are those having well-formed, pointed crowns, uniform branching, dark green needles, no defects, show dominance in height growth in relation to the average, little to no animal damage, and have more than one-half the total height in live crown. These trees shall be selected as leave trees.
E. Trees indicative of poor quality in the 0.1 to 5.9 inch DBH class are those having one or more of the following characteristics. These trees shall be selected for cutting:
1. All trees growing under the drip-line of a codominant or dominant tree.
2. Height growth noticeably less than the average for the stand.
3. Trees having animal or mechanical scars that have girdled the tree.
4. Forks or evidence of excessive wide spreading crowns and heavy limbs.
5. Trees leaning more than five (5) inches from vertical.
6. Trees noticeably too tall compared to diameter growth that will be susceptible to snowbend, windthrow, or breakage.
7. Trees containing pronounced sweep or crooks. A sweep is defined as 4 inches or more departure from center in any 8 foot log.
8. Spiked, broken or severely deformed tops.
