About this file

This document is a technical submittal letter from Tensar International Corporation to the Sacramento County Department of Transportation regarding the Meister Way Improvement Project, specifically addressing pavement section alternatives for a road segment between Bear Paw Drive and Lone Tree Road. The letter presents a proposed pavement structural section using Tensar's InterAx Geogrid technology, which aims to improve the performance of the aggregate base supporting the road's wearing surface. The proposed section includes 2.0 inches of RHMA-G, 6.0 inches of HMA-LG, 14.0 inches of Class 2 Aggregate Base, and the Tensar NX850 Geogrid, with a total depth of 22.0 inches, designed for a Traffic Index of 12 and a subgrade R-Value of 5.

The technical submittal describes how Tensar's mechanically stabilized layer (MSL) technology enhances load spreading capabilities by confining aggregate base materials, reducing vertical and lateral movement, and increasing shear strength. Large-scale triaxial testing demonstrates that the InterAx stabilized aggregates exhibit higher shear strength and greater ductility compared to non-stabilized aggregates. The document includes a cautionary section highlighting that actual site conditions may vary, and recommends consulting a qualified geotechnical engineer to evaluate and confirm the proposed solutions' suitability for the specific project site.

Project Name: Meister Way From Bear Paw Drive To Lone Tree Road Sacramento County, California

Subject: Tensar InterAx Geogrid Submittal Stabilized Section Alternatives

Dear Mr. Flores, In accordance with your request, the undersigned prepared this letter to present pavement section concepts using a mechanically stabilized layer(MSL). The purpose of the MSL is to improve the performance of the aggregate base supporting the wearing surface of the pavement section.

Tensar’s MSL is calibrated with local research. Table 1 presents Tensar’s conceptual pavement section for the specified TI and subgrade R-Value using Tensar InterAx Geogrid to create an

MSL.

To prepare alternative sections Tensar representatives reviewed:

• “Meister Way Improvement Project Bear Paw Drive To Lone Tree Road “C” Plans”, Preliminary Plans, Prepared by Sacramento County.

Tensar Enhanced Pavement Foundation Description

By applying Tensar Technology, the load spreading capability of a InterAx® mechanically stabilized layer improves the support and deformation characteristics compared non-stabilized aggregates. The geogrid achieves this through confinement that reduces the potential for the aggregate base to move vertically and laterally. The reduction in movement results in a composite mechanically stabilized layer (MSL) that provides increased shear strength. Additionally, the system can experience greater stress with less strain. Large scale Tri-axial testing has shown:

1) InterAx stabilized aggregates show higher shear strength than non-stabilized aggregates.

Figure 1 illustrates the increase in the shear strength of the InterAx stabilized system. The InterAx geogrid restrains soil particles against lateral movement and rotation in and around the InterAx apertures. This results in increased shear strength of the composite system.

Limitations

If project conditions or final design vary from those described in this letter, Tensar should be contacted regarding the applicability of, and the necessity for, any revisions to the conclusions and concepts presented in this letter. This letter is based on the project as described and the information provided to Tensar by Sacramento County.

This report has been prepared for the use of the specific application of the described project. It may not contain sufficient information for other users or other purposes.

Actual site and ground conditions may materially vary from those used for illustration in this document, including with respect to (i) the project site and its surroundings, (ii) ground conditions including subgrade, foundation and surface soil conditions, (iii) topographical, environmental and seasonal factors, (iv) water conditions above and below ground, (v) factors affecting the backfill requirements, and (vi) factors affecting loading, performance and other project requirements and expectations. These and other considerations should be evaluated and confirmed by a qualified and experienced geotechnical engineer engaged by the site owner or other designated party.
