About this file
This is a Questions and Answers document providing clarifications on the Solicitation COMBO-AFRL-RIZ-2026-0009 for two (2) explosive-resistant friction ovens to be delivered to Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. The document addresses four key technical inquiries from potential offerors regarding oven specifications and operating parameters. The Government confirmed that heating and cooling rates should be comparable to current capabilities (~10°C/min), that steam heating will be avoided in favor of friction air heating methods going forward, and that there are limited ancillary equipment areas available outside the Class 1, Division 1 hazardous location space, positioned approximately 100 feet from the installation site. The ovens must be rated as Class A internal units suitable for placement within a Class 1, Division 1 explosive atmosphere environment. Regarding solvent make-up air requirements, while no firm solvent specification exists, the Government provided a worst-case scenario of up to 1 liter of acetone at 60°C being placed in the oven batch-wise for drying purposes, which offerors should use for their design and ventilation calculations.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
1. What is the heating rate / cooling rate control requirements (For Example: 1 deg f/min or o.1 deg f/min)?
There is no current specified heat rate, but the current ovens (both friction air and steam) can do ~10 C/min. The requirement would be something comparable.
2. How are materials heated currently?
Currently both steam and friction air ovens are utilized. The steam ovens are fed by 15 psig saturated steam, but going forward the intention is to avoid steam.
3. Is there room for ancillary equipment outside of the Class 1 / DIV 1 threshold and how far from this space would the oven be installed?
There are limited areas outside the Class 1, Division 1 room. These are areas are currently utilized nearly to capacity and are up to ~100 ft away from the installation location.
4. Do these ovens need to be Class A? What is the solvent equivalent and quantity for make up air requirement calculation?
Yes, the ovens need to be Class A (internal) and rated for placement in a Class 1, Division 1 room. There is not a firm solvent requirement, however, in a likely worst case scenario, up to 1 L of acetone at 60 C could be placed to dry in a batch-wise fashion.
