Project Title Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Recovery Project Manager
General Information
1.0 Background and Purpose
The Hermits Peak Fire began because of the Las Dispensas prescribed burn on the Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest. It was declared a wildfire on April 6, 2022. Named the Hermits Peak Fire, the wildfire began approximately 12 miles northwest of Las Vegas, NM. The Calf Canyon fire started on April 19, 2022, from a winter prescribed pile burn project. The two fires merged on April 22nd during high wind events. The fires were then managed as a single incident called the Hermits Peak-Calf Canyon (HPCC) Fire, eventually burning onto the Carson National Forest.
The combined HPCC Fire ultimately burned 345,718 acres, affecting four New Mexico counties; San Miguel, Mora, Taos, and Rio Arriba. Forty-two percent of the affected area was on lands within the Santa Fe and Carson National Forests, with the remaining fifty-eight percent occurring on state, private, and tribal lands. The general locations affected by the HPCC incident are the eastern flank of the Sangre de Crist Mountains, generally east from Pecos to Las Vegas and north to Angel Fire, NM.
In the aftermath of the Hermits Peak/Calf Canyon wildfire, the Forest Service is conducting joint operations that facilitate an integrated response and recovery approach. The Pecos/Las Vegas District of the Santa Fe National Forest (SFN) is implementing a program of work (POW) related to post-fire recovery operations including but not limited to road maintanenance and repair, hazard tree removal, trail clearing, range infrastructure repair, and firewood harvesting. There is a need to coordinate the various project components and planning efforts and provide project management services. These services would include working with district personnel to manage project schedules, track project milestones and accomplishments, development of acquisition packages, and assistance with administration of contracts and/or agreements.
