About this file
This is a specification section for rough carpentry work prepared by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) for the Colleton State Park Ranger Residence Renovation project. The document outlines comprehensive requirements for framing with dimension lumber and engineered wood products, shear wall panels, rooftop equipment bases, wood blocking, furring, plywood backing panels, and related rough carpentry components. The specification details product requirements including lumber grades, moisture content limits, wood-preservative treatments complying with AWPA standards, and fire-retardant treatment options. Specific framing grades are designated based on application, ranging from Construction or No. 2 grade for non-load-bearing interior partitions to No. 2 grade for other framing applications. The document establishes submittal requirements for product data, material certificates, and evaluation reports from ICC-ES for treated wood, engineered products, and fastening systems.
The specification addresses material sourcing with emphasis on compliance with DOC PS 20 grading standards and ALSC Board of Review certified agencies. Fastener requirements specify compliance with NES NER-272 standards for power-driven fasteners and ASTM specifications for bolts and galvanized steel anchors. Metal framing anchor options include manufacturers such as Simpson Strong-Tie Company, Cleveland Steel Specialty Company, and others. Installation requirements mandate compliance with AF&PA WCD 1 standards for conventional wood frame construction and manufacturer's written instructions for engineered products. The specification includes protection requirements for treated lumber and provisions for field treatment of cut surfaces. No pricing information, contract award dates, or response deadlines are specified in this document, as it functions as a technical specification guide for construction materials and methods rather than a standalone solicitation.

2.1 WOOD PRODUCTS, GENERAL
Retain "Certified Wood" Paragraph below if wood products are required to be certified for LEED. Retain first option and delete list that follows if all rough carpentry must be certified wood. An alternative method of dealing with this credit requirement is to retain requirement in Division 01 Section "Sustainable Design Requirements" that gives Contractor the option and responsibility to determine how the credit requirement will be met.
A. Lumber: DOC PS 20 and applicable rules of grading agencies indicated. If no grading agency is indicated, provide lumber that complies with the applicable rules of any rules-writing agency certified by the ALSC Board of Review. Provide lumber graded by an agency certified by the ALSC Board of Review to inspect and grade lumber under the rules indicated.
1. Factory mark each piece of lumber with grade stamp of grading agency.
Retain only first option in first subparagraph below if authorities having jurisdiction require grade stamps on all materials.
2. For exposed lumber indicated to receive a stained or natural finish, omit grade stamp and provide certificates of grade compliance issued by grading agency.
Revise subparagraph below if rough lumber is acceptable for all work.
3. Provide dressed lumber, S4S, unless otherwise indicated.
Retain one of three options in "Maximum Moisture Content of Lumber" Paragraph below, or delete paragraph if green lumber is acceptable in all thicknesses.
