3. Algae Resistance: Granules treated to resist algae discoloration.

Asphalt shingles are produced in many standard colors. Some manufacturers also offer tablike standard color tone variations on exposed portions of asphalt shingle strips.

4. Color and Blends: Weatheredwood.

B. Hip and Ridge Shingles: Same Manufacturer's standard units to match new asphalt shingles.

2.2 UNDERLAYMENT MATERIALS

Retain first paragraph below for felt underlayment. Retain one or both product standard options. Type I felt predominates and is the minimum accepted by the IBC and the IRC. Type II felt is more than twice the weight of Type I felt. Buckling of Type II felt is more likely to telegraph through asphalt shingles.

A. GAF Weather Watch XT ice and water barrier. Install along top ridge of existing roof under the new nail base insulted panels. Install on top of the new nail base insulated panels to create a continuous barrier.

2.3 NAIL BASE INSULATED ROOF PANELS:

A. Panels: GAF Cornell ThermaCal1 ventilated roof insulation panel, 3” total thickness. R-8 value.

Self-adhering, polymer-modified underlayment in three paragraphs below is used to resist leaks from roof areas forming ice dams and other roof areas vulnerable to leakage. Retain first paragraph if granular-surfaced sheet is required.

2.4 ACCESSORIES

A. Asphalt Roofing Cement: ASTM D 4586, Type II, asbestos free.

NRCA recommends barbed- or deformed-shank nails for added pull-out resistance. ARMA recommends smooth-shank nails, but allows barbed or deformed-shank nails. Some asphalt shingle manufacturers recommend barbed or deformed-shank nails.

B. Roofing Nails: ASTM F 1667; aluminum, stainless-steel, copper, or hot-dip galvanized-steel wire shingle nails, minimum 0.120-inch- (3-mm-) diameter, barbed shank, sharp-pointed, with a minimum 3/8-inch- (9.5-mm-) diameter flat head and of sufficient length to penetrate 3/4 inch (19 mm) into solid wood decking or extend at least 1/8 inch (3 mm) through OSB or plywood sheathing.

1. Where nails are in contact with metal flashing, use nails made from same metal as flashing.

2.5 METAL FLASHING AND TRIM

A. General: All flashing, drip edge and trim shall be of the same material and manufacturer and match existing shape.

1. Sheet Metal: 28 gauge galvanized steel or 040 Aluminum, mill finished.

B. Fabricate sheet metal flashing, drip edge and trim to comply with recommendations in SMACNA's "Architectural Sheet Metal Manual" that apply to design, dimensions, metal, and other characteristics of the item.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 VENTILATED ROOF INSULATION PANELS

A. Pre panel installation:

1. Ensure existing sheathing is not rotted. If there is rot, allow owner to inspect prior to replacement.

2. Before installation of insulation panels, check existing sheathing and add additional nails to ensure a max edge spacing of 6inches and a max field spacing of 8 inches.

3. Remove and re-nail any protruding nails.

4. Remove all debris and dirt prior to insulation.

5. Allow for owner inspection of finished nail pattern on existing sheathing prior to installing insulated panels.

6. Install ice and water shield over roof ridge to seal top of roof prior to installing panels.

B. General: Install ventilated roof insulation panels as per manufacturer’s written recommendations for high wind applications. Do not install if temperature is 45 degree F or less. Roof existing sheathing must be dry and free of debris and dirt before panels are installed.

C. Contractor shall use GAF/Cornell SFS Deckfast nailboard fasteners as recommended by GAF for high wind applications. See fastener pattern requirements at end of this specification.

3.2 UNDERLAYMENT INSTALLATION

A. General: Comply with underlayment manufacturer's written installation instructions applicable to products and applications indicated unless more stringent requirements apply.

Retain first paragraph below if single layer of felt underlayment is required. Roofs with a slope of 4:12 or greater are usually installed with a single underlayment layer. Verify requirements of authorities having jurisdiction.

B. Ice and Water Shield: To be installed as necessary.

Retain first paragraph below if double layers of felt underlayment are required. Roofs with slopes of 2:12, but less than 4:12, are usually installed with a second underlayment layer. Side lap and starter course dimensions are based on 36-inch- (914-mm-) wide rolls of felt underlayment. Objective is to maintain double-layer felt underlayment coverage with 2 inches (50 mm) to spare. Verify requirements of authorities having jurisdiction.

3.3 METAL FLASHING INSTALLATION

A. General:

1. Install metal flashings according to recommendations in ARMA's "Residential Asphalt Roofing Manual" and asphalt shingle recommendations in NRCA's "The NRCA Roofing and Waterproofing Manual."

2. Drip edge along gables/rakes shall be installed over the ice and water shield while drip edge along the eaves is installed under the ice and water shield.

3.4 ASPHALT SHINGLE INSTALLATION

A. General: Install asphalt shingles according to manufacturer's written instructions.

B. Install GAF starter strip along lowest roof edge, at least 7 inches wide with self-sealing strip face up at roof edge.

1. Extend asphalt shingles 1 inch over fasciae at eaves and rakes.

2. Install starter strip along rake edge.

Retain one offset pattern option in first paragraph below for multitab-strip asphalt shingles. Diagonal installation is recommended by NRCA. Confirm that offset pattern retained is approved by manufacturer for asphalt shingle specified. Insert a particular offset pattern if required.

Retain first paragraph below for laminated-strip asphalt shingles. Diagonal installation is recommended by NRCA. Insert a particular offset pattern if required.

C. Install first and remaining courses of asphalt shingles stair-stepping diagonally across roof deck with manufacturer's recommended offset pattern at succeeding courses, maintaining uniform exposure.

Retain first paragraph below if manufacturer recommends racking method for specified asphalt shingles.

The IBC and the IRC both state that asphalt shingles have the minimum number of fasteners required by manufacturer and comply with wind-resistance requirements based on Project location. Basic fastening for most asphalt shingles requires four roofing nails; some asphalt shingles require five. The IBC and the IRC both require special methods of fastening where roof slope exceeds 20:12 and for locations where the basic wind speed is equal to or greater than 110 mph (176 km/h). Verify requirements of authorities having jurisdiction.

D. Fasten asphalt shingle strips with a minimum of six roofing nails located according to manufacturer's written instructions.

Retain first subparagraph below for steep-sloped roofs. Retain option if manufacturer requires more roofing nails than in paragraph above.

1. Where roof slope exceeds 20:12, seal asphalt shingles with asphalt roofing cement spots after fastening with additional roofing nails.

Retain first subparagraph below for low-sloped roofs.

2. Where roof slope is less than 4:12, seal asphalt shingles with asphalt roofing cement spots.

Retain subparagraph below if asphalt shingles are installed in cold weather and could be subject to high winds. Factory-applied, self-sealing strips do not activate at lower temperatures.

3. When ambient temperature during installation is below 50 deg F seal asphalt shingles with asphalt roofing cement spots.

Retain first paragraph below if woven valleys are required. They are generally limited to some laminated-strip shingles. Verify, with manufacturers, acceptance of valley treatment.

Retain first paragraph below if closed-cut valleys are required. They are the preferred form of valley treatment among roofing contractors for most types of multitab- and laminated-strip shingles. Verify, with manufacturers, acceptance of valley treatment.

E. Closed-Cut Valleys: Extend asphalt shingle strips from one side of valley 12 inches beyond center of valley. Use one-piece shingle strips without joints in valley. Fasten with extra nail in upper end of shingle. Install asphalt shingle courses from other side of valley and cut back to a straight line 2 inches (50 mm) short of valley centerline. Trim upper concealed corners of cut-back shingle strips.

Retain first paragraph below if open valleys are required. Some manufacturers do not recommend open valleys, but they will accept them. Verify, with manufacturers, acceptance of valley treatment.

Retain first paragraph below for ridge vents.

F. Ridge Cap Shingles: Maintain same exposure of cap shingles as roofing shingle exposure. Lap cap shingles at ridges to shed water away from direction of prevailing winds. Fasten with roofing nails of sufficient length to penetrate sheathing.

Retain subparagraph below if retaining ridge vents.

1. Use GAF Timberline Ultra HD Ridge Cap Shingles.
