About this file

This is a Performance Specification document for a CH-53K Communication, Navigation and Instrumentation (CNI) maintenance trainer (Device 11B112) for the United States Marine Corps, to be located at the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Marine Unit facilities at MCAS New River, Jacksonville, North Carolina.

The specification defines requirements for a full-size maintenance task trainer that replicates the CH-53K nose, cockpit, and forward cabin section to Station 282, including instrument panels, consoles, avionics bays, flight controls, displays and other systems. The trainer must support maintenance training tasks including system functional testing, fault isolation, troubleshooting, and component replacement across 49 different aircraft systems ranging from flight controls to communications equipment. Key requirements include an instructor operator station for fault insertion/control, high-fidelity physical components matching the actual aircraft, replicated wiring and interfaces, and the ability to simulate normal operations and fault conditions according to aircraft technical manuals. The trainer must operate in an unclassified mode and meet various environmental, safety, cybersecurity and maintainability requirements.

Performance Specification for CH-53K CNI Training Device

SCOPE

This specification establishes the functional, performance, and verification requirements for a new United States Marine Corps (USMC) CH-53K Communication, Navigation and Instrumentation (CNI) maintenance trainer that will be at the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Marine Unit (CNATT MARU) facilities building AS235 located at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) New River, Jacksonville, North Carolina.

System Identification The CH-53K CNI is designated as Device 11B112. The CNI will be used as a full-size training device to aid in the development of maintenance skills and support first-level maintenance training of the CH-53K cockpit and avionics areas to maintenance personnel as described herein, see section 3.1 and subsequent paragraphs.

System Overview The primary use of the CNI training device will be to train cockpit and avionics system familiarization, component identification, the performance of function tests and all variations of Built-In Tests, fault isolation and remove and installs of selected Weapons Repairable/Replaceable Assemblies or Line Replaceable Assemblies.

Document Overview For purposes of this specification, the terms CNI, device, trainer, training system, and training device are equivalent. The terms “shall”, “will”, and “objective” are used with specific intent throughout this document. All requirements are threshold requirements except those specified as objective. The threshold requirements represent the minimum acceptable value necessary to satisfy the training need. The use of “shall” denotes a threshold. Requirements defined using “shall” are considered to be binding and require formal verification. Requirements defined using “will” express intent, are not binding, and therefore do not require formal verification. The term “objective” expresses capabilities beyond the threshold requirement. Objectives present an opportunity to exceed the threshold requirement if a cost effective implementation is achievable.
