About this file

This Request for Bid is issued by Auburn University's Purchasing Department on behalf of the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station for the provision of grazing cattle to support beef cattle research at the Wiregrass Research and Extension Center in Headland, Alabama. The university seeks 50 head of crossbred, large-framed, #1 grade stocker steers weighing 450 to 525 pounds that meet specific breeding and health standards, including vaccination requirements for IBR, PI-3, BRSV, seven-way blackleg, and Hemophilus somnus prior to delivery. Cattle must be castrated, dehorned, healed from these procedures, and pre-conditioned for 30 days before shipment. Delivery is required within a one-week window from January 5-9, 2026, with pickup coordinated for mid-April 2026. The cattle will be used in cool-season grazing trials from January through early April 2026 at a stocking rate of 2.0 head per acre on cool-season annual grasses and supplemental forage.

Compensation to the successful bidder will be calculated based on price per pound of average gain achieved by the research center, less 2% shrinkage, as measured on certified scales. The bidder bears responsibility for death losses up to 2% of total weight, while the center assumes liability for losses exceeding this threshold. The bidder must also arrange and pay for return transport of any cattle testing positive for anaplasmosis, theileria, BVDV, or Johne's disease. The research center forfeits compensation if cattle gain less than 100 pounds average per head. Bidders must provide scale weights from certified scales for both incoming and outgoing cattle, assembled from as few farms as possible and preferably not from sale yards, with uniformity emphasized for research trial purposes. The center reserves the right to inspect cattle upon delivery and reject those not meeting specifications or appearing chronically ill.
