About this file

This document is a technical procedure for initial engine start and break-in for Caterpillar D-398, D-348, or 3406 series engines. The detailed 15-step process covers critical initial startup procedures including fluid preparation, pre-lubrication, initial start, operational monitoring, and post-startup maintenance requirements, with specific emphasis on checking oil pressure, listening for unusual sounds, monitoring engine parameters, and conducting thorough inspections.

The related federal contract opportunity is a U.S. Coast Guard solicitation (52000QR250020069) for a Caterpillar 3406 long block engine parts kit for the USCGC VENTUROUS. The solicitation is restricted to Caterpillar Authorized Parts & Service Centers, requires OEM new or remanufactured components, and seeks a complete parts kit delivery to St. Petersburg, FL by February 16, 2026. It is a small business set-aside with a firm-fixed price, requiring vendors to be registered in SAM.gov, and quotes are due by July 18, 2025. The contract includes a 1,000-hour or 12-month warranty and requires the vendor to handle core returns within 45 days.

SSDG/EDG INITIAL START AND BREAK-IN PROCESS

The subject of initial startup and break-in procedures for D-398, D-348, or 3406 series engines isn’t provided in the CATERPILLAR Service Manuals.

Please utilize the following guidelines to complete this process.

1. Fill all fluids to normal operating levels.

2. Energize all heaters and allow sufficient time (24 hrs) for them to bring temps to within their designed range.

3. Prime the fuel system. Check for any fuel leaks.

4. Pre-lube engine and pour a quart of oil into the turbocharger housing (s) via the oil inlet/supply line to provide lubrication prior to initial start.

5. Bar the engine over by hand (DO NOT USE STARTER) at least two full revolutions or more in the same direction as normal engine rotation (do not rotate backwards) to ensure it doesn't bind up at any point. IF the engine feels abnormally tight or reaches a point you can’t turn it over by hand STOP and investigate possible causes. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO START until the issue is identified and corrected.

6. Start the engine locally and observe the gauge panel for oil pressure (Note: oil pressure is the most critical concern at this point). Once oil pressure has been confirmed check all other parameters for normal operation.

7. Listen for any unusual noise and check over the engine multiple times for leaks while continuing to monitor the gauge panel.

8. If the engine is free of leaks, has no abnormal noise, and all parameters (oil, fuel, jacket water, raw water) are within the normal range continue to operate for 30 minutes to allow temperatures to stabilize. Continue to check for any signs of leakage, abnormal sounds, or vibration.

9. After 30 mins of no load operation and the engine is operating properly (temps & pressures are within the normal operating ranges) place the engine under load and continue to look & listen for anything abnormal.

10. Recommend a minimum of 24.0 engine hours (under load) before getting underway. Remember to pull and test oil samples for fuel dilution. This will give you the ability to monitor engine performance over an extended period to identify and correct any potential issues before getting underway

11. Test all safety devices for proper operation.

12. Remember to “zero” out your engine hours following overhaul and note the date in your machinery history.

13. Remember to record this MPC as complete.

14. Once the engine has approximately 100 hrs. you will need to complete a base line set of DEMPS.

15. Complete your first oil and filter change IAW the MPC and send off oil samples for testing.
