About this file

This is an attachment providing resources and guidance on Section 508 compliance for map tools and accessible map design. The document compiles links and references to tools, websites, and articles that support the creation of accessible digital maps compliant with federal accessibility standards. Key resources included are color blindness simulators (coblis-color-blindness-simulator and vischeck.com) that allow testing of map designs for color-blind visibility, ColorBrewer (colorbrewer.org) for selecting color-blind-friendly color schemes for maps and graphics, and ESRI guidance on making web map applications accessible to users who are blind or partially sighted. The attachment also references accessibility guidelines from the World Wide Web Consortium Research and Development Working Group (W3C RDWG), examples of accessible maps from various organizations including the Minnesota Department of Health, and static map accessibility best practices from accessiq.org.

This resource compilation appears to support the greater solicitation for professional environmental consultant services under the USDA Forest Service Land Management Integrated Resources (LMIR) Blanket Purchase Agreement (BPA) for the Greater Sage-Grouse Programmatic Land Management Plan Amendment. The focus on Section 508 compliance and accessible map tools suggests that any deliverables or web-based components produced under this contract must meet federal accessibility requirements, particularly regarding mapping tools and geographic data presentation. The referenced resources provide contractors with specific guidance and validation tools necessary to ensure compliance with accessibility standards during the development of project materials.

Color blindness simulators http://www.color-blindness.com/coblis-color-blindness-simulator/ - accepts .jpg, .gif and .png files less than 600kb in size. It is very cool!

http://www.vischeck.com/ - I always used to use this website, but does not seem to be fully functioning these days.

Find Color Blind Friendly color schemes - I love this website!

www.colorbrewer.org – suggests color schemes that are distinguishable by a person who is color blind. According to the web site, "ColorBrewer is an online tool designed to help people select good color schemes for maps and other graphics."
