About this file
This document is a 2009 rare plant monitoring report for the Sheyenne National Grassland in North Dakota, prepared by Yellowfield Biological Surveys for Dan Svingen of Dakota Prairie Grasslands.
The report documents field surveys of 14 rare plant sites conducted between July 14-16, 2009. Monitoring activities tracked the status of nine plant species including Apios americana, Campanula aparinoides, Carex formosa, Cypripedium reginae, Equisetum palustre, Euonymus atropurpureus, Galium labradoricum, Gymnocarpium dryopteris, Menyanthes trifoliata, Onoclea sensibilis, and Solidago flexicaulis. For each site, the surveyor David Schmoller recorded GPS coordinates, plot dimensions, plant frequencies using presence/absence data in microplot transects, habitat descriptions, and associated species. Key findings indicate that cattle trampling damaged several wetland sites (APIAME001 and SOLFLE001), Cypripedium reginae was not located at two historical seep sites (CYPREG002 and CYPREG003) though young Platanthera hyperborea specimens were found that could have caused previous misidentifications, and several species such as Equisetum palustre and Onoclea sensibilis maintained robust populations in shrub-carr and sedge wetlands. The survey documents evidence of beaver activity affecting multiple wetland sites, notes difficulty relocating some original plot stakes, and includes detailed species photographs and microplot data tables showing plant presence patterns across sampling units.

RARE PLANT MONITORING
SHEYENNE NATIONAL GRASSLAND

2009 RARE PLANT MONITORING
SITE APIAME001 SPECIES Apios americana DATE 15-Jul-09 SURVEYOR David Schmoller PLOT ID FS01080101KF044 PLOT SIZE 15m X 10m METHOD Density DIRECTION NW to SE
GPS 14T 630487 5155207
FINDINGS
Site was overrun by cattle within the past two weeks and badly trampled. There was no trace of APIAME nor many other species normally found in this habitat. It was a wetland below a spring seep that emerges from the base of the hillside. It levels out in the area of the historic APIAME and begins supporting woody species such as Cornus alternifolia, Tilia americana.
No plot posts were relocated.
Photo of trampling on reverse.
HABITAT

FINDINGS
Heavily shaded site below trees, shrubs, and dense Carex lacustris. Plants are widely scattered in site, not in flower, extending to reach sunlight. Most appear to be producing buds at the time of the survey.
About 25 plants seen in plot. This is a sedge/woodland/shrub wetland, with some standing water in spots.
About 1000 plants in entire population, which covers about 50m x 30m area.

SITE CYPREG002 SPECIES Cypripedium reginae DATE 14-Jul-09 SURVEYOR David Schmoller PLOT ID FS01080101KF006 PLOT SIZE 35m X 10m METHOD Census DIRECTION NW to SE
GPS 14T 622200 5150879
FINDINGS
No CYPREG found at this site. It is a seep at the base of a steep slope, very boggy, like quicksand in spots.
Dense stinging nettle in the wettest portions at the base of the toe slope, then further out the wetland shows more diversity and gives way to shrubs, then trees. It is possible that the CYPREG is absent due to browsing by deer, yearly variations, weather, or misidentification in previous surveys. There were some Platanthera hyperborea, which when young might be mistaken for CYPREG.
Two stakes found in site, although only one would have been from original survey; they were only a few meters apart.
Apios americana found about 20 feet to SE of GPS point. One plant, twining up forbs and sedges.

Forbs are in the wettest portions at the base of the toe slope, then further out the wetland gives way to shrubs. It is possible that the CYPREG is absent due to browsing by deer, yearly variations, weather, or misidentification in previous surveys. FINDINGS
GPS led to site that fit description of survey of 8/22/2001 which said it was "near the top of the hill overlooking the beaver ponds...in an opening and along the edges…the opening is mainly bluegrass and the edges are box elder and oak and poison ivy." However, no stakes were found, and no box elder was seen in the immediate vicinity. Box elder was downslope along the wetland edge. No Euonymus was seen despite a detailed survey of the opening and surrounding woods. There is the possibility that the GPS coordinates were innacurate or that the species has been extirpated from the site.
No plot posts were relocated.

FINDINGS
Original GPS waypoints led to a location beneath dense, tall shrubs, without any trace of MENTRI. This is probably due to GPS error in survey of 2001. Thus, the microplot was relocated to a population of MENTRI at CAMAPA003 microplot locale. The two populations were combined into one microplot. The new GPS waypoints are shown above. Neither post was relocated at the CAMAPA microplot, so a new microplot was established based on the CAMAPA waypoint.
