About this file
This is a technical report documenting 2018 rare plant monitoring survey results conducted across 20 sites in the Sheyenne National Grasslands in North Dakota. The survey was conducted by Lauren Dennhardt, PhD, and her team on July 17, 18, 20, and 23, 2018, building upon previous monitoring efforts from 2002 and 2009.
The report documents findings for 20 monitored species sites including marsh bellflower (Campanula aparinoides) at six locations, marsh horsetail (Equisetum palustre) at three locations, and single sites for groundnut, handsome sedge, showy lady's slipper, northern green orchid, wahoo, bog bedstraw, zigzag goldenrod, sensitive fern, buckbean, and oakfern. Key findings indicate that several target species were not located despite previous documentation (Apios americana at site 1, Euonymus atropurpureus at site 15, and Cypripedium reginae at sites 10 and 11), while others showed abundant populations (Campanula aparinoides throughout multiple wetland sites). Several sites have experienced significant habitat changes since 2009, with cattails and invasive species increasing at several locations. The report includes detailed microplot data using presence/absence coding, GPS coordinates, UTM coordinates, associated species lists, photographic documentation, and five reference maps showing site locations. Surveying methods varied by site including frequency sampling, density counts, and census approaches with quadrat sizes ranging from 0.25M x 0.5M to 1M x 1M. The report recommends that sites where target species were not located be reassessed or altered to match current sampling protocols and notes suggestions for improved site access and future monitoring procedures.

2018 Rare Plant Monitoring
Sheyenne National Grassland
Lauren Dennhardt, PhD
Assistant professor of science, Valley City State University
Introduction
Observations were made on July 17, 18, 20, and 23rd at 20 sites in the Sheyenne National Grasslands.
Previous reports from 2002 and 2009 were used to locate and conduct surveys. A few sites were not recovered or found to have a different rare species. It is suggested in the report that those sites be altered to match current sampling protocol.
The sites varied in their sampling method, quadrat size, and site size. We determined what method to use based on previous surveys and have included them here for easy access.
The number in parentheses at each site header indicates the 2018 site number.
Maps and directions to sites are included at the end of the report.
A huge thanks to Yaritiza Villanueva, Ryan Schaner, and Ellen Anderson who all contributed to this survey.

Figure 2. Sites 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 13, 15, 16, and 17. Most locations can be accessed via 148th Ave as seen on the map. There is a dirt road in the Sheyenne National Grasslands that allows you to drive closer. 1 and 17 can be accessed via 149th, but you must go north to highway 2 and then back south to 149th. You cannot see the road on this map

There is a gate and walking path that gets you close to each site which is accessed near the
Sheyenne Oaks Campground
Figure 4. Sites 2, 11, 14, and 20. All sites can be accessed from 149th Ave which cannot be seen on this map. You need to go south on 148th from 2, east on 61st St SE, then south on 149th to access the road. Do not go directly south from 2 to 149th

Quadrat 0.5M x 0.5M GPS 46.5377671801755, -97.2982548896694
Findings
We did not find Apios americana at this site. The GPS location did not match the site description. We walked toward the base of the slope and found a lot of Amphicarpaea bracteata at the site but still did not locate Apios americana. We believe the Amphicarpaea bracteata outcompeted the Apios americana. I don’t recommend returning to this site because nothing was found for the last two sampling periods.
No stake was located.

Campanula aparinoides was not flowering. Superficially, Cerastium nutans gives the impression it may be in flower. Campanula aparinoides were abundant throughout the wetland, including the site.
Southernmost stake was found at the site. It had fallen over, so we propped it back up.

Carex formosa scattered within the site, but not as common as Carex sprengelii. In a low wooded area with plenty of duff, but most is covered with understory vegetation. Leaf litter is roughly 30% of the understory which is considerably less than in previous surveys. Cryptotaenia canadensis, Osmorhiza longistylis, Asarum canadense, and Parthenocissus inserta are extremely common.

Just as it was reported in 2009, we did not find any lady’s slipper at the site. We did find Platanthera aquilonis (previously reported as Platanthera hyperborea). We found eight in the site. I recommend we switch this site from showy lady’s slipper to northern green orchid as a census.
The stake was sort of found. We found a crushed remnant of an orange stake. We did not have any orange tape, so we marked the site with a green Bismarck t-shirt on a speckled alder.

Flooded spot with a lot of Onoclea sensibilis, Matteuccia struthiopteris, and Carex lacustris. The sampling area is relatively open compared to the surrounding deciduous forest.
We found one pole at the site.

Findings
Plenty of Campanula aparinoides and Menyanthes trifoliata at the site. Menyanthes trifoliata was not flowering. We established a plot based on the GPS waypoint. Cattails took over the site since 2009. It was difficult to find and walk through. Not many sedges were left.
The posts were not found, but it was obvious that we were in the correct location.

Temporary wetland dominated by cattails.

Findings
Found all the Gymnocarpium dryopteris along the slope. They are very small compared to the other ferns at the site. It took us a few minutes before we were able to find them. The site is at the base of a hill between a deciduous forest and a wetland.
There were three stakes at the site. Two of the originally stakes and an orange stake.
Habitat
Boggy site at the base of the hill. Becomes more of a wetland further into the site.
