About this file

This document is an inspection form template for evaluating handpiles created during tree thinning services. The form is used by government inspectors and contractors to assess the quality and compliance of slash piles with specified standards.

The inspection process requires contractors to inspect one percent of piles per acre and rate each pile across four criteria: Size (a), Density (b), Location (c), and Paper Placement/Size (d), with ratings of 0 (unacceptable) or 1 (acceptable). The overall compliance percentage is calculated using the formula: (Total from columns a+b+c+d) ÷ (4 × number of piles inspected) × 100. Size standards require piles to be no smaller than 6'×6'×6' and no larger than the maximum specified in the silvicultural prescription, with all required material within 50 feet piled. Density standards mandate compact piles with material placed parallel, including fine fuels and larger 1000-hour fuels (3+ inch diameter), with exterior trimming limiting pieces to no more than 2 feet beyond the majority material. Location standards require piles outside the dripline of residual trees, arranged perpendicular to slopes to prevent downhill rolling. Paper placement standards specify Kraft #80 water-resistant burnable paper positioned within the top third of the pile, covering three-quarters of the pile diameter or 4'×4', whichever is larger, with heavy slash placed on top to secure it. The form includes sections for recording forest, district, stand number, inspector, contract information, and individual pile assessments.

Tree Thinning Services Exhibit 05

Exhibit 5: Handpile Inspection Form

Forest District Stand # Inspector (Govt.) Date

Contractor Contract Inspector Contract # Acres

Plot # Pile Number Size (a) Density (b) Location (c) Paper (d) Placement/Size

Comments

Total:

Directions: Contractor shall inspect one percent of piles per acre and rate each column (a, b, c, d) with a:

0 = unacceptable, or 1 = acceptable

Calculate by:

Total number from column (a)+(b)+(c)+(d) X 100 = %

4 x number of piles inspected

Example: (5+4+5+3) X 100 = 85.0 or 85%

4X5 piles

Rating Specs:

• Size - should be no smaller than 6’x6’x6’ and no larger than maximum size specified in the silvicultural summary prescription. All required material within 50’ of the pile has been piled.

• Density - pile should be compact with all material placed parallel within the pile including a good mix of fine fuels in addition to larger 1000-hour fuels (3+”diameter). The exterior of the pile shall be trimmed with no pieces remaining more than 2’ beyond the majority of the material.

• Location - piles should be located outside the dripline of residual trees or in areas to avoid damage to residual trees. Material should be arranged perpendicular to the slope to prevent the pile from rolling downhill.

• Paper placement and size - paper should be located within the top 1/3rd of the pile. Paper should cover

¾ of the diameter of the pile or 4’x4’, whichever is larger. Heavy slash shall be placed on top of the paper to firmly hold the paper in place. Paper is required to be approved water-resistant burnable paper

(Kraft #80).
